working on a 1990 ford probe GT. OK so its not a honda but I need help. I have little experiance with turbos. the boost is not kicking in. is there a method of checking the waste gate, could it be stuck open; not alowing it to spool? how does the boost control solenoid valve work? is it a common part? it has a compressor bypass valve...how do I know it works right? the unit itself is an IHI. I'm a turbo retard. I need help.

nevermind. I figured it out. I took my hand held vacuum pump, hooked the hose to the exhaust side of the pump and to the gate actuator diaphram and pumped to see if it would open. it did. same with the bypass valve, it works. I tested the control solenoid, pulled it out and played with with it on my bench. it seems to work fine. the only thing I found was some lose hoses. she has boost now. but her clutch is fried!
I HATE FORDS. Actually IT's A F#!^ked Over Rebuilt MAZDA.

I've got a couple of Ford turbo's as well, have had a lot of fun with them (like you, I seem to have wondered here by chance). As you've found, loose hoses can screw up the works, I imagine it's far more so with a Probe. A few of bits of advice, since you're a newbie (better word) to turbos, that should make them last longer (sadly, from experience):

1. Always let the engine idle for a minute or so before shutting down, longer if it's been ridden hard. This allows the turbo to cool down, otherwise the oil in the bearings can carbonize when oil flow stops and the turbines are still hot.

2. Change your oil religiously, at somewhat shorter intervals (like 80%) compared to non-turbo vehicles, because of the extreme heat the oil experiences cooling the turbo.

3. Finally, make sure never to let your catylitic converter get clogged! I made this mistake once, and didn't realize my overheating problem was turbo related until I pulled in one night and discovered an evil yellow glow coming out from the side of my engine compartment. This was the turbo and exhaust manifold *glowing*, and god knows that was expensive!

Apart from that, enjoy! Turbos can be a lot of fun, though there is certainly an art to learning how to drive them right - there are a lot of factors that determine the power that you can get out of them.

thanks for the advice. helps alot. the car doesn't belong to me but I do drive it sometimes and it's pretty quick when things work right on it. the mazda engineering is good on it but the fact that ford had there hand in it ruined it. has electrical probs and such.
I would like to take that boost and stick it in my ACURA. NOW that would be fun. lot o' work but I could do it if I had time and money.
