Hi, does any one know how a clutch works. Local honda dealer says pressure plate is worn. and I will need a clutch replacement soon.

How many miles on your car? What kind of car?

Pretty easy to tell if a clutch is slipping. Can you floor it and the vehicle speed increased proportionally with the engine revs? If the revs increase wildly without the car doing much, you need a clutch disc or pressure plate (PP). Do the gears grind when shifting? Could be an indication of the clutch not disengaging.

If you need a new clutch, you should get a clutch disc, PP, release (throwout) bearing, and pilot (flywheel) bearing. And if you're interested in making your car perform a bit better, why not get a lighter flywheel?
