Does anyone know what could cause my GS-R to be overheating??? The coolant has been flushed, the thermostat has been changed 3 times, yet it still CONSISTANTLY heats up to about 3/5ths of the temp gauge, and will stay too hot to work on for 3-4 hours after it is shut off.
Any help would be heavily appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Thanks

Are you sure you don't have a coolant leak? If the engine drain bolt is loose, coolant could leak out and evaporate, and you'd never notice it. This doesn't seem very likely though, b/c it's a big bolt with very fine threads.
My car, with unmodified engine, gives temp gauge reading of 2/5's, even under hard track driving in 105F ambient temps, so something would seem amiss.

Maybe your radiator is full of calcium. If your thermostat is good, there is no reason why your engine should be too hot. Are you sure your cooling system is well-bleeded ???

Could be one of a few things, I guess.
Clogged radiator (don't know if a flush would fix this). Are you using distilled water in there? If not, things in the cooling system get nasty.
Air in the cooling system. Have you opened the bleed valve when doing these coolant changes? The bleed valve is a small (10mm maybe?) nut with a nipple (like a brake bleed bolt) that is located at the joint where the upper radiator hose goes into the engine block. Open it to let the air out while the engine is warm and running.
Bad water pump. How old is your car (miles, age)? This is usually changed with the timing belt.

I've been through this before. You need to be VERY CAREFUL not to COOK that motor. Those aluminum engines WILL warp
The first thing you need to check are your fans. if they are not coming on when your gsr is warmed up about half way on your guage then more then likely your temp switch in the bottom of your radiator is bad. make sure by checking to see if you get battery voltage to the switch by unpluging it. you can bypass by cutting the connector and twisting the wires together but your cooling fan will run when the ignition is on.
Its fairly common for those switches to go bad.
Check for visible leaks in the system. if you are losing coolant but don't see how then you have problems. pull your plugs out then rotate the engine with the starter. if water gushes out then...well...warped head or block or hopefully just a blown gasket. lets hope it's none of the above.
the bleed is a 12mm and you need not to run engine to bleed. the air will rise out. Close bleed when coolant come out in a steady stream.
You could have a lack of coolant flow by restictions in the radiator or a bad pump. You can check the flow by sqeezing the radiator hoses. you should feel the flow once the thermostat opens. if it don't seem to have flow then check or replace the radiator first. it's easier. Then again...
It may also be your water pump. as ryan says, it's always a good idea to change the timing belt as with the water pump.
I've experianced the same problem as you are having and went to do the timing belt/water pump repair and the belt Was MISSING TEETH
Also, believe it or not, if the valve timing is off then it would run a little warm, in some cases, if the belt is off a tooth or two. but I don't think thats your problem.
I hope this gives you the answers you need. happy motoring

I am pretty sure that the radiator/coolant system is fine. Could it be the water pump?

better to be sure then to go though the work. 'specially if you never done a timing belt/waterpump. much harder it is for a rookie. (sounds ike Yoda.) if you do think it is an are planning to do the work yourself invest the $60 bucks or so for the helms book if you aint got it yet. chilton and hays suck when it comes to alighning the timing belt. pull the plugs to see if your not losing water inside the engine. oh yeah I almost forgot, check the oil, make sure it is not a milky color

Does temp gage run above 2/5 (normal) during highway cruising or just at idle ?
If all is well during cruising, then likely a fan problem. Insure both fans work properly (come on during idle condition after gage reaches 2/5)
Definitely insure radiator is full of coolant... Coolant level has to get pretty low before you would see gage increase however.
As noted there are numerous places for coolant to leak... (I just replaced my 97 GSR radiator due to a large crack in top tank along the front parting line...)
Check condenser and radiator cores for plugging or severely bent fins.
