That's good.

It's do-able, if you leave the soundproofing & FREDs out and use high-strength steel. Or aluminium. The car weighs 1,272-1,344 (diesel excluded) by UK standards, so there's a diet required. Mind you, ours 'weigh' heavier as we include fuel and (I think) two occupants as the standard. But check that...

I'd imagine they'll offer a GT version again (that out-sold the base by a big margin) which will be civilised for road use.

The GT86 suffers a lot of roof/wind noise, partly due to a lack of soundproofing in the roof. It's like a tin shed in the rain! That's around 1,250 KG in street trim, and it's not sparse.

1200 KG would be unbelievable.

The Megane 2.0T RS adds about 180 KG on the 1.6 boring version.

Honda would need to take out >220KG from the standard Civic hatch! Too much.

I think they need to make a new coupe/3 door hatch - based on the new fit.
In 2016 Honda could pass that chassis technology on to the 5 door hatch.

UK Market SE 1.8 Manuel weighs 1288 kg.

And its made mostly of low strength steel.

Its not like they can just change the grad of steel fed into the those monster stamps!? The whole chassis and production facility is planed depending on the type of steel.
Engine transmission brakes etc all will weigh at least 100 kg more than the base 1.8 version.

1200 sounds good but also like a different car.

FWIW, FN2 CTR was 1270kg, contemporary 1.8 Civics were 1200-1280kg, depending on trim. Can't see the new one hitting 1200kg, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

You did previously mention that there was a possibility Bagpuss (and the 2012/13 US Civic) would have very short lives, due to their relatively poor acceptance.

Does that now seem likely?

Yup, I saw that, and thought much the same. And dipping into what seems to be becoming my specialist subject, the Golf GTi is 1370 kg including a tank of petrol and driver. OK it's quite a big car these days, but it doesn't seem that light.

But the standard one already comes with turbo drivetrain and co so getting rid of a few kilos is easy.

Which would make sense if Swindon will swap and only make cars based on that new plank. No more crv made in UK then.

So, the 2015 Type R formula is looking something like a turbo engine, a dual-clutch gearbox, adaptive suspension and a bloody great tea tray. Make of that what you will.

I'm not sure why this is suddenly recycling as "news" in the British media circles because all of this information came out late last year. I mean, ever since they announced their intentions of breaking the 'Ring FF record, it's been pretty much set for a 2015 release, turbo engine, and DCT. I guess the adaptive suspension part is the only "new" thing.

Slow news day, Jeff.

Also, it was possibly overlooked earlier.

The British press is invariably so busy worshipping the Germans, they don't have half a clue what is happening at Honda.

It's a far more significant company (and advertiser!) in the US than the EU. Despite the fact they've got a factory here and jobs are hard to come by...

The US/UK juxtaposition of Honda has always fascinated me.

A tea tray is a tray on which tea (in cups) may be placed. Along with biscuits or cake. See also : Ford Sierra Cosworth.

[ Auto Express ] has a few remarks I've not seen before :
But we do want to keep the Honda character and although this is quite a challenge the new Type R will be the highest revving turbo engine on the market.

"To create a fast lap of the Nurburgring has many requirements but two things stand out. Firstly the long back straight means a high top speed is essential which means good aerodynamics, but also the sheer number of corners means that if you can cut even a tenth of a second at each corner it will add up to make a big difference." [...]

"In terms of timing it is true that the Type R will arrive in the second half of the Civic lifecycle, so will probably only be on sale for two or three years, but that should be enough time to enhance the brand image and boost sales of the standard car."
