Wow, it just came to me... just celebrated our 27th anniversary in Vegas... and I started to think that I sort of stick with stuff I like and trust...

Duh! My first Honda car was a 77 CVCC Civic... so I figured I'd post the list of Honda cars ( I'll ignore the Vega GT, Scirocco, Alfetta GT, Mustang 289 M&3 and Datsun 510)..

77 Civic CVCC Wagon
84 Civic S
86 Integra 5 door LS (*)
89 CRX Si (*)
90 Civic Si
90 Integra sedan GS
91 Accord SE
93 Vigor LS (5MT)

95 Accord EX (5MT)
97 3.0CL
97 3.2TL
99 TL
99 Civic LX
99 Prelude SH (*)
00 Odyssey EX
01 CL
02 Odyssey EX
03 RSX-S
03 Civic Si (EP3)
05 Odyssey EX-L
04 TL (*)
05 Accord Coupe V6-6MT (*)
07 Odyssey EX-L NAVI
06 HCH NAVI (**)
09 CRV EXL AWD NAVI
09 Fit Sport (NAVI and 5MT) (**)
11 CRV EXL AWD NAVI
12 Civic Si NAVI (**)
12 TSX Wagon Tech
13 Civic Si NAVI (*) (**)
13 TSX Wagon Tech

That's like 32 and running...

Never got an S2K on account of a color dispute with my Better Half who can not understand that 'silver' is not the proper color for a car that MUST BE RED. So she sort of got even by gifring me at Christmas a nice scale S2K model.... in HER colors (silver with black/red interior). Duh!

(*) All Stars in my heart.

I've purchased just 15 cars in about that same period of time with nothing I'd say was special. Well, my V8 Mustang would be worth maybe $25k US now but water under the bridge. So looking at my Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda list of cars I nearly bought, I give you a selection of the cars I test drove, new or used, and I almost purchased:

The Fast Fords List

'71 Mach I - 351 Cleveland/Auto
'84 1/2 Mustang GT-350 20th Anniversary 3dr Turbo4/MT5
'90 Mustang LX 3dr 5.0/MT5
'93 Mustang Cobra

The What Was I Thinking Fords List

'74 Mustang Mach I - Cologne V6/MT4 - the Go-Faster stripes didn't work very well
'87 EXP Sport Coupe
'85 Merkur XR4Ti - car I voted most likely to explode on me
'90 Probe GT - Turbo 4/MT5
'90 Escort GT - 1 year shy of the Mazda-based Escort GT

The older I get, the better they were.

The Thinking Paul Newman Was Cool In A Datsun List

'78 F10 Hatchback - ugly as sin and a 2000 mile valve lash interval
'83 280ZX Turbo - the rear spring squat with just the slightest of acceleration feature was much worse than I expected
'88 D21 Truck King Cab SEV6 4x4 - great looking truck with all of 150 HP
'90 D21 Truck King Cab XE 4x4 - even less HP
'90 240SX Hatchback - nice car
'94 Altima SE - nice car as well

The I'd Like To Forget List

'57 Dodge Power Wagon Truck
'76 Triumph TR7 Victory Edition
'72 Porsche 914 w/ Appearance Package
'95 BMW 318Ti hatchback
'86 Chevette S
'78 Triumph Spitfire

The Civics I Have Tried To Buy List

'85 Civic DX 3dr
'90 Civic Si
'90 CRX Si
'94 del Sol VTEC
'96 Civic EX Sedan
'03 Civic EX Sedan
'09 Civic Si Sedan
'12 Civic EX-L Sedan

Other than the '93 Mustang Cobra and the '90 CRX Si I can't say I'd stop to look at any of the above cars these days.

Interesting list.

VW diesels were very popular back in the early '80s because they were good cars. A neighbor had a very nice metallic red diesel Dasher 5dr which, looking back, makes me think of a Saab 900. And then VW sort of went away until 1998 or so.

There were no Mazda dealers in my area until about the time the RX-7 went on sale so a '70s Mazda truck would have been a Ford Courier. Better truck than the Chevy LUV. And the '80s B2000 was an excellent truck for the money. It was a sad time when Mazda started selling rebadged Ford Rangers.

Mazda Great Little Car, indeed. If only they hadn't rusted so badly because they were good cars.

A relative went through four Chrysler minivans putting over 150k on each with practically no mechanical problems while hauling cargo and towing a trailer now and then. For his third van I convinced him to get the trailer package with bigger tires, brakes, springs, etc. and the thing was a great cargo van. A current neighbor just recently sold his '93 Caravan Sport in great condition. Credit to Chrysler where it is due.

I like red sporty looking cars. Our Prelude SH and CRX Si were red and beautiful even if they did require a lot of upkeep.

The 99 ITR we came within two hours of buying was Championship White with a black interior. In that case, yes, White is nicer because the shape of the ITR is not really sporty. Similarly, our GSR was dark green.

Also, goes without saying, like any other Pakistani, my first car before graduating to a Honda was a 4 speed 800cc three cylinder Suzuki Alto, which made a whooping 30 odd horsepower. Leaf spring suspension straight out of a horse cart. A million mpg, and 0-60 in a respectable half an hour. For safety, well it had seat belts, and occupants were supposed to act as crumple zones.

But dare I say that it was the most fun car I ever had?

I had 2 Corvairs in my "yute". A '63 and a '68...they were both great cars, I had a blast driving them and absolutely no mechanical trouble. Screw you, Ralph Nader.

I know they have a bad reputation for reliability. I think the secret to driving a Corvair successfully to a high mileage with no mechanical problems was to "keep the revs up"...which I have always enjoyed doing. Being an air cooled engine (with fan assist), you wanted a lot of air flowing over the engine.

95 Integra GS-R Sedan
98 Integra Type-R – favorite car ever

Cars I regret NOT purchasing:
92 VW Corrado VR6 - best VW ever built IMO, great shape, great handling, wonderful engine (for the time), although they proved to be horribly unreliable

02 S2000 – stupidly declined purchasing a 1-owner, private party, 29K mile example in superb condition last spring because I didn’t love the color (Spa Yellow), thought I could find another in white, silver or red for the same money. After a year of continued searching, I was soooo wrong. It sold for only $12,400!!!!!

06 Evolution IX - when I purchased my Si (Aug '07), was considering an Evo instead. South Coast Mitsubishi still had leftover '06 Evo's with big discounts. Didn't have the SE model I was looking for (aluminum roof, BBS wheels, trim bits, etc), only had the base GS-R's available for ~$28K + $550 shipping to Ohio. Again stupidly declined, not recognizing what a great car I was missing out on.

08 WRX STI with BBS wheel option – was seeking $8K off sticker and 0.0% financing for 63 months. Dealer offered $7500 off +0.0% financing (Oct/Nov '08). I declined, month later dealer called back and offered me the full $8K off and the 0.0% financing. I had moved on and declined.

Weak ringlands and bad (lean) factory tunes.

Exact cause isn't specifically known, but the factory pistons are cast (not forged like JDM) and factory tunes are tuned for mileage and EPA reasons, although both stock and tuned cars still both tend to have failures with no rhyme or reason.

I have been close to pulling the trigger several times on a WRX, and SC would have called me a dummy if I didn't get the STi, so I started looking at those before I got my Accord.

The following reasons kept me away:

1. The redesign is close, and if the concept they showed materializes, it could be interesting.

2. The interior is too spartan. I know you don't buy a car like this because of the interior, but that thing is in serious need of an update.

3. This would be a commuter car basically, and though I love cars like this, the Accord V6 6MT just couldn't be beat when I considered all angles.

1983 – Civic 1500s
1985 – Prelude
1988 – CRXsi **My Fav**
1985 – Accord 4 door
1987 – Accord 2 door hatch
1992 – Prelude
2001 – Acura CL Type S coupe
1998 – Accord 4 door
2004 – Accord 4 door

The 04 Accord is getting very long in the tooth and I'm looking for number 10. As I get older, drive slower, and become more of a miser, I'm leaning toward the new Fit (I may even opt for the manual....)

Since I'm already older and (hopefully) wiser, I went the other way: Comfort and quiet. Along with decent handling and an all-around superior driving experience: The RDX. I can't see myself bouncing along in a car like the Fit. That's just me. My worn-out left hip, from too many manuals, requires an automatic now.

My youth favorite was my '66 Corvair Corsa hot rod with lots of go-fast handling stuff. The modern-day equivalent would be the Toyobaru boxer-engine coupe.

Considering what I did to that car, it did amazingly well. The most embarrassing moment was when the serpentine belt blew on a major highway on the way to a live theater performance in western Ontario. The guy who stopped was the current boyfriend of my long-term girlfriend and date. Awkward! The poor lady was boyfriendless by the Monday. Sad.

The other time was when the throttle cable broke 100 miles from home. We found a coat hanger and wired the throttle open. Four speeds, period. Engine on, engine off, engine on...

We sure are spoiled by the reliability of today's cars!
