I know this is an announcement concering HPD, IndyCar and sportscar racing, but could it be related to the McLaren/Honda dealings as well? (check the mention in this thread by Rolledansx)

Very 'Good' thing!
Magneti Marelli is probably the best company in engine electronic management.
So it looks like Honda finally woke up and instead of doing everything themselves,it might be better to work with the best in the certain field and they could put more engineers on other important things.

And judging from how HPD engined cars are going in Indycar testing, not a moment too soon! :(

They are doing alright at Barber.
Two turbos are better than one turbo on road/street courses because of its better lower end and throttle response.
Honda picked the Indy 500 over the road/street course.

Real question is, Is Honda going to win more than two road/street races in 2013?
Also, should note that Honda (HRC) is being forced to work with Magnetti Marelli in MotoGP since MM will be sole supplied of Engine Management Units for Motogp starting 2014.
My understanding is that what MM is bringing to the HPD table is expertise in Direct Injection control. Indycar uses DI, New LMP2 engine uses DI, and any new LMP1 engine for 2014 will use DI.

Since Magneti Marelli is owned by Fiat, I wonder if... nah, I'm not gonna say it.

It is going to be weird seeing the Magneti Marelli name in the engine bay of the new NSX.
But there is nobody better to control the DI from low rpm to 9000 rpm!
A NSX-R making 200hp per liter...what a goal!

One more item. From the HPD point of view, one of the weaknesses with the current Indycar engine is drivability. These days that's all engine management. And Ferrari in particular is known for drivability.

If you was following 12hrs of Sebring this week you would of see the hardtime Honda had with the new DI engine!
They're having a very bad ECU problem(over rev and traction control problems) and that unit is made by Mclaren.
With these facts.....it explains why Honda is forming a Technical Partnership with Magneti Marelli!

They probably went with McLaren fo LMP2 because Indycar mandates McLaren, so HPD had some experience with it.
So Perhaps Magnetti Marelli will be helping HPD program their McLaren Indycar ECU's? And In F1 Honda is buddy-buddy with McLaren. Interesting.
