The talk from Japan is the new roadster will be more like the S800 with Beat engine location. So bigger than a Kei-car but smaller than a CR-Z.It will have a hardtop option and the talk is it will be global.Might see that new 1000cc I3 engine in NA and turbo form.
And the NSX has been seen testing in the snow.

Was that at the Nurburgring? Noticed they had a bucket load of snow over there yesterday..................

So 2015
new V6 T in F1
new V6 T in NSX in NA
new i4 T in CTR in EU
new i3 T in S1000 in JP
This all sounds like some global genius master product marketing plan...
...in 2014
New Fit-City-CUV with DI and DCT-hybrid systems
New TLX with something special too
Works up an appetite for the CR-V & ILX update!
Or are they just the cash cows to finance the above??

Selling that car in the US is probably going to be as big a mistake as the CR-Z.

Selling any car smaller than the CR-Z will be a problem.

I'd buy a fun car to replace my NA Miata.
That car would be smaller than the CR-Z.
If it was under 20 grand, it'd be a smash hit.

It'll also be mid-engined... Even some NSX tech might trickle in.
If it's actually the non-EV-STER it will look great too.

You wouldn't like a 20-25k,1800-2000 lb, 150hp, mid-engine, rwd roadster?

I would like it, if it really was that light and had at least that much power by the time it actually made it to the road. I absolutely loved the EVSTER styling when I saw it at the Chicago show. Is this thing going to be styled like that?

Thats what they say,it will look like the Ev-ster and they brought it to the USA Auto Shows to see if the public would like it here.

I thought it was great and so did my friend that went with me, so tight and sporty looking. That power to weight ratio wouldn't be bad - not quite S2000 but better than Civic Si.

150hp is not enough for 2015 or now.
Make it 220hp+ from 3cyc turbo, weight less than 2000lbs and keep the price under $25K.

Lets hope this 3 cylinder, have it be Turbo or not, sound something along the first generation Honda Insight's! Sounds ALOT like a V6! :)

My thoughts;
It was first going to be the Kei Car Beat replacement until the GT86 was launched and AHM asked for a Rwd Sports Car in the same price range.I think Honda took that idea(mid-engine rwd roadster) and move it from the Kei platform to the new Global Fit Platform.
This is what I see
1)In the same price range as the GT86
2)First car with the new i-DCT hybrid(a must in Japan and Southeast Asia/price point/tax relieve)
3) In the 200 hp range- plus or minus a few hp (lead engineer-goal is to be like a street bike with 4 wheels)
4) On Sale in Japan early 2014,the rest of the world late 2014 to 2015.

So if it uses the new i-DCD 1-motor transmission which is a variant of the NSX 7speed DCT + ~40hp motor to combine w/ ~150hp 3 cyl turbo in a Global Fit Platform as a mid-engine rwd roadster, that could be Honda's GT86 competitor?
Hm, I like it. Its mid-rwd layout and tech give it something exotic and possibly better against the GT86's elegant FR simplicity. Then again, things I like tend to not sell well. :-/

I hope that won't be the case. The conservative board members will be like, "Told you so!" and proceed to axe anything sporty again.
Then again, Honda marketing. HMMMMMMMM..

so it's safe to say this Honda roadster is basically the future ND-Miata competitor?
word is that the next generation ND-Miata is targeting the figures posted above.

There were rumours the 'old new S2000' was looking to move downwards too, after the S3000 was cancelled.
Then again, there have been a couple of proposals for an S1000/S2000 (four & a V8!) a couple of times in Honda's history and they never made it. Well, the second time around, the V8 became a big four and it did make it...

It would be cool if the new lo-cost roadster gets some trickle down from the NSX...
For example... take one bank from an NSX engine to create an Inline-3 DOHC VTEC N.A. :D
I'm kinda torn whether s1k should have turbo. If turbo does come standard it will rekindle the tuner scene for Honda not seen since the 90's through mid 00's. On the other hand I think having turbo standard will make this future s1k something you should only buy new. I don't know about you guys but I will never buy a turbo second hand.

I wonder if the new Dohc S07 I3 will be like the old Sohc E07 in that it came in two sizes 660cc and 980cc.So Japan gets the 660cc and the World gets the 980cc? In Japan it will be NA and Turbo.
I think it will be too small for the new Dohc 1.3-1.5L I4 but it is rumored to be built off the new Fit platform.

I dig a little deeper.
In Japan
It will be Kei-car size and have a Dohc S07 660cc I3 Turbo that will be tuned for higher rpms than the same engine in the N-Box.To get around the 64 hp max law it will be hybrid. Will look like the EV-STER and there will not be a EV model.
Price 1.7 million yen to 2 million yen
World
Most likely will be a little bigger and have a 1 liter I3 turbo hybrid...built in Mexico and Thailand

For Honda's biggest and most important customer (U.S.A. that is...) it better be just as quick to 0-60 as 2013 Accord Sport 6MT or else it will be another DOA dud like CRZ.

Yeah I don't expect Honda to produce high output engines in those countries.
Better they add 1.5/1.8 na engines, they shouldn't weigh more than the turbo with its extra plumbing in a mr setup.

The Prelude wasn't known for its quickness, but how well it handled.
The Integra wasn't all that quick either but had a buttery smooth engine that loved to rev.
If this car has 0-60 times around the same as the Civic SI it will be successful. Honda has to get the handling down right, the tuners and aftermarket will take car of the powerplant tweaks.

the Prelude VTEC was reasonably quick for its day - 0-60 in the low-mid 6s and you'd see them running 14s at the strip which put it within range of stock V8 muscle cars of the day.
For people to pay attention to this S1000 it will need to be close to the S2000's performance numbers - 0-60 in the 5's and 1/4 in the high 13s should be the acceleration target. If they can get there and keep it under $28k or so, look out.

Indeed; the Germans needed a heavy 2.8-litre six when the 'Lude achieved the same with a 2.2-litre counterbalanced four. And handled better with 4WS...
That's harder to do today, since everyone is using hypercharging.
Since many consider the 197 BHP of the old 'Lude and GT86 to be barely sufficient today, Honda should think very carefully indeed about the S1000. It's unlikely to be significantly lighter than those two.

And for the confusion about what platform it will be built on is because there might be three specs.
Japan..... built off the N platform(Kei-car)
Japan export.... built off the N platform but bigger with 1L turbo engine
Global..... built off the Fit platform with 1.5L turbo engine
At the moment only the Japan market one has the full green light.....should go on sale July 2014

The export version should get at least 125kw out of the turbo engine. That's about the benchmark in that segment.
If they make the global version with 1.5turbo on the fit base, they should consider a different chassis trim - like the gear concept.
