I understand that California has some air quality concerns which are in need of correction. However, when looking at the big picture, why can't Honda just mass produce their cars with the lower emission equipment? It may add a couple of hundred dollars to the cost of each car, but would we not all benefit? The flipside would be the accolades and praise from the press, enviro groups and hippies. Wouldn't that prove to everyone without a doubt that Honda not only creates this great technology, but proves they are a TRUE leader!

I believe it has more to do with the gas sold in CA, along with the fact they have their own ratings system.

For more info on CA vs Federal standards, take a look here:

uhm.. ic.. but if they sell it widely like prius.. some city DOT like new york would buy a fleet of them. I know NYC DOT use prius for their duty car and TaxiLimoComission here use the electric RAV4 so why dont sell hybrid civic to public and see how many hippies left in USA hehehahah

Interstingly, carsdirect.com charges an additional $135 in California for this "option", which seems to be the cost of basically a bigger catalytic convertor...

Other than the expected lower emmisions and apparent longevity of the system, there is no special incentive to buy this option in Cal....at least that I can see. Maybe "hippy status" is enough, hehe. BTW, I am a full-on California dude, so no flaming me on that.

Forgot to mention - this PZEV status is for the ACCORD ! !. The AT-PZEV status for the Civic Hybrid and Nat Gas are freebies with those car technologies...

My experience with Honda cars is that they are essentially all 50 state cars... the difference is in the paperwork.

How do I know this? Three years ago we bought a port damaged Civic that was destined to be shipped to Phoenix... as we live in California we had to wait for AHM to ship us the correct paperwork. The car didn't need any mechanical work.

Insofar as gas goes... our "oxigenated" gas cuts back on emissions, helping out to cut back on summer smog, but sofar as the hybrids are concerned, the gas has a very small effect since the car already run ultra leaned, clean high mileage motors.

Perhaps the reason behind the limited availability is cost. AHM is heavily subsidizing IMA in the US.... it would make more sense to install IMA in the TL/RL where the additional 3000 bucks would be a far smaller percentage of the cost of the car and where the consumers might be more willing to pay for it -specially if it added AWD.

A vehicle we could really use is the natural gas Civic. It was only sold in the U.S. where Gsoline is cheap and there is supposedly insufficient or sporadic natural gas infrastructure. It should have been sold in Canada as well where gasoline is to damned expensive and there is adequate natural gas infrastructure. Using the "adventures in the real world" philosophy from their ads, why not give us a nat gas CRV, RSX or even the ugly hatchback. Combine the versatility of these vehicles the a home refueler now available and you would get VERY low operating costs, VERY low emmisions, and a cheaper to produce vehicle than a hybrid that could actually turn a profit. Driveability would FAR exceed a hybrid or Cell vehicle. Honda has always given me fits when they won't give us products available elsewhere or sitting in their parts bin. I really think it is time for them to go beyond headlines and give us the clean air vehicles that they can build NOW to us NOW. A couple of hundred Insights won't change the world. Several thousand gas sucking SUV's NOT on the road will make a difference.
