Obviously not a direct comparison because of different colours and angles but...
The front grill/bumper/hood and the rear taillights make the car look substantially more upscale (or at least, not cheap). I still remember looking at the pre-MMC sedan and wondering what the fuck was going on in the front clip, why those wheels looked so bad and why the rear resembled an extremely cheap older-gen Camry's.

I like the revised taillights better.
By having the most horizontal/landscape orientation of the taillights, the car looks visually more planted and sporty. The 2012 model's more upright nature makes it look like it may tip over at a turn.

I guess the new rear end sure benefits all markets. In the US, the more horizontal landscape of features make it look more upscale, and the slap-on rear fogs look like they will be integrated into the new extended portion of the taillights. Either that, or they'll be placed in the bumper with the reflectors like on the Civic Hatch and CR-V.

I agree. IMO, the biggest problems with the 9th gen. Civic design is the design language itself. The whole one piece, cab-forward design is flawed. I hate the A-pillar design and the Camry-esque tail-lights as well as the swoopy profile. I look at the 1998 civic and even the 1978 civic and think "these were sporty designs". I don't see that in this droopy, pointed nose, which the redesign is trying to make look more blunt. It's too late and I hope that Honda goes back to a more traditional car design that doesn't try too hard to be futuristic. I don't want a car that has to add an additional glass piece at the base of the a-Pillar. It looks tacky and Priusy.
Here's a cg model that I made of what I wish the current gen. Civic looked like. It lacks final character lines and some edging out of some of the curves, but you get the idea. No more cab-forward design, pointy nose, or Camry tail lights.

The ILX profile ain't too shabby IMO. I kinda like it, but the car as a whole is too conservative and lacks flair. I didn't have the ILX in mind when I started this, because it wasn't out yet, but I see some similarities in the profiles. I made this model way before I saw the 2013 Accord. I guess now I could tack on an Accordish grille, like the upcoming 2013 Civic. The main thing that I kept close to the Civic where the overall length and basic height. This model is wider than the current Civic and has a slightly longer wheelbase.
In doing this I learned to appreciate the current Civic design a whole lot. I still don't agree with it's basic profile, but it definitely does have its merits. I just wish the styling was fresher and with a sportier look.

I was at the dealer yesterday getting our CR-V serviced and took a look around the showroom.
There was a current Civic EX-L on the showroom floor. For as much flak as it gets I think it is a nice looking car as is. Even the interior isn't as bad (the EX-L has leather but doesn't change any of the dash materials) as I recall either. This makes me very excited for the update in a couple of weeks.
What did strike me is that the Civic EX-L had a price of just over $24k. Just a few feet away was a brand new Accord LX. It was $23k. Even in base form the Accord looked WAY classier than the top end Civic, for $1k LESS.
