Not sure if maybe the TOV-ers are asleep or this article just hasn't caught wind yet, but this looks like big news (or maybe it's been known for awhile now and I'm late to the party?). But that's right. The production version of the NSX will bow at the NAIAS in January. Supposedly "identical" to the concept from last year. This news comes from a 'A top exec for Honda Brazil' in Sau Paulo show where the NSX concept is making the rounds

I have serious doubts that we will see the production NSX in Detroit, or even a prototype. It wouldn't surprise me much if we saw an updated concept, however.
It also wouldnt surprise me if we see a first prototype at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, but since the new NSX is a US-led development effort, 2014 NAIAS is more likely.

Not a sleep, just a little numb. We have been bombarded with so much info about this halo car for a few lucky stiffs in a few years, that some of us have moved on.

I personally am more interested in the 'new Beat' which is scheduled to sell in 2014, meaning it will show up end of next year for the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Based on recent events, if people shout loud enough, maybe Ito can be pressured to sell it worldwide. A Mazda MX-5 Miata (Roadster) competitor from Honda...

I'm still just trying to get an idea of what size this new car is going to be. Kei car or not?

I don't think so. Sadly.
Mazda is working with Alfa Romeo on the next versions of MX5/Miata/Spyder - the Beat would be beat competing against these twins, like the CR-Z vs. the BRZ/86...
Even the new 3 is supposed to have Alfa design input.

The original Beat was Kei-car size, very tiny. But Kei-car sizes have been steadily increasing as well. The Beat was never marketted as a 'sports car' but as a 2-seater convertible but this one Ito-san specifically calls a sports-car. I am writing up a short feature of the original Beat, complete with some (what I think are) interesting statistics and figures which should be up soon. Then we can have a better frame of reference.
The original Beat was MR but to be honest wasn't very fast. If that concept is upheld with this new version, then perhaps it won't be competitive with the MX-5. But I hope there is some significance when Ito-san calls this new one a 'sports car'.
More importantly is whether the Honda of today can be persuaded to do away with the stupid 'JDM-only' rule they loved to have in the past.

I have put up a 'feature car' article on the original Honda Beat that Honda sold in the JDM only from 1990 till 1995. I even managed to find some performance statistics from my stash of old japanese car magazines. As usual, the article is available http://asia.vtec.net. Hope it will be interesting to you guys and might give you an idea of what to expect in 2014 (hope you guys can also visit our TOVA facebook page and give us a 'like' if you are on facebook).

I wonder if this is only a little off, and I wonder if what we will see in Detroit is the Production Race Car version of the NSX? Along with the announcement of which series/class the car will race in?
I expect that the NSX will race somewhere in the 2014 season. Coincidentally, 2014 is when the ALMS and GrandAm merge and when there are new rules for ACO (LeMans) racing.
So if HPD is going to race the NSX in 2014, they should know what series and what classes by Jan 2013. In order to get teams to sign up to buy the car for 2014, they need to start selling and testing in 2013.
ALSO, if the NSX is NOT at 2013 NAIAS in SOME FORM, people will start talking about it possibly not being real.

Looking at the 6 wagon, Mazda will should make the new 3 really nice enough.
But with Mazda & Alfa working on the roadster - it wouldn't really surprise me. The current state of both companies would encourage it.

I believe the (mostly exact) quote was, "... launch globally within three years" Later we heard that it will be an all new plant in/around the current Ohio facility. Does anyone know if this has been built yet?

Within the last six months or so I have heard twice about the time schedule. Once that the road car would be a 2014 model and another time that it would be raced for sure in 2014, and possibly in the latter half of 2013, perhaps as a non-scored entry, much like the delta wing was.
As to the plant, I seem to recall it being referred to as being built in a new facility in Ohio, not necessarily a new building. So they could be carving out space for it in an existing building.

You need to consider the timeline of the events and how long it takes btn design frozen to first car line off.
The co-operation btn Mazda and Fiat was announced in May(IIRC).
The alfa roadster is said not to come out until 2015.
OTOH, rumours are (and I won't be surprised) the next MAzda3 may sell sometime next year.

I can say this based on some really good authority: Don't count on it. AT ALL.
If you want a compact Alfa, you get a compact Alfa. Or you get a Dodge Dart. Otherwise, the only things that Alfa will do with Mazda are joint venture projects.

Or possibly the Honda engineers have made significant progress and have managed to speed up the development cycle ? So Ito-san's 3 years comment was the original project timeline but the R&D engineers might possibly be looking at delivering before this committed timeline... Still, NAIAS 2013 is too early I would think. For one thing, as some may point out soon, where are the spy photos and video's of the car testing in the Nurburgring or some race-track ? Surely Honda is not thinking of just talking up the performance of the new NSX. They -must- run in on a proper race-track in order to guage its real on the road performance and for actual performance tuning. But so far, nothing. Well, maybe tomorrow someone might surprise me/us and drop a video of the new NSX breaking the R35's record in the 'ring. This (faster than the R35) rumour has been thrown around quite a bit...

Nobody said that the mechanicals or tuning had to be complete. This could be more of a "concept update" that will closely reflect what's going into production.

Good point, I had not considered that. I did see some aerial photo somewhere showing the (future) plant site, so this is why I was thinking they're making a new facility. However, it's possible it was only showing the general areal.
