I expected Honda to be drawn toward the new engine regulations in 2014. Maybe a few years after they will dive in too, as an engine manufacturer.

I told you their new WTCC racing program would have a negative impact on other considerations of other racing programs such as F1.
Yamamoto says that Honda's current international racing efforts will be focused on the World Touring Car Championship – and only once it has started winning should it consider a further ramping up of efforts that could include F1.
"The first thing we must do is win in the WTCC, and then perhaps we can look further afield," he said.
Let's hope for Honda to win WTCC next year then :P The sooner they win it, the sooner we're likely to see them back in F1. But also, the later they enter after 2014, the harder it becomes to win, as the other engine manufacturers will be much more advanced and experienced with the new engines.
Like many Honda fans, I lost the interest in F1 after they left in 2008, but I have to admit that - apart from the current engine freeze BS which is a complete turn off - I find the current aero regs make the cars look so horrible that I don't know if I would be enjoying seeing a Honda on the track looking like that!

Honda will be interested in F1 as long as they race in the US. Looking back over their history every time racing has been dropped from the US they leave. When racing is reinstated they come back.

History of the story:
When F1 was looking to downsize the engines from 2.4L to 1.6L most of the auto companies wanted to use the global 1.6L I4 turbo engines but Ferrari and Honda push for V6 engines. So the F1 board sided with Ferrari and Honda.
In Nov 2011 a story broke that Honda was going to return to F1 with McLaren but Tokyo denied the story.
www.jamesallenf1.com/2011/11/is-honda-really-up-for-f1-return-with-mclaren/
Now almost a year later.... one of their top engineers is talking about it. Funny a year ago... it was a big no!
Just a little hint about Honda.... if they are talking about it the project is way into the design process and most likely into the development phase(testing)!
WTCC comment is just to make face because if they don't return to F1.But most likely it will be because of F1 politics!!!!
Bernie Ecclestone went to Italy to see the new Ferrari V6 run and he didn't like it and might delay or kill the 1.6L V6 turbo engine!

Every manufacturer will happily say they could see themselves running in F1, does it happen all the time... quite simply no is the answer.
Racing as we all know is part of Honda's Heritage, but it comes at a "price" (big commitment the engineer speaks of).
Honda will be back but it's only when budgets allow!!

please just form the gpma so we can do away with that little shit ecclestone.
Just have top manufacturers duking it out, no favouritism, just top level racing.

Boy, if Bernie croaked, the series would flourish.
Not that I'd ever wish that on anyone...
...but I'm just sayin'. He's an old codger with an agenda and too much money. The series would be better without him.

Well there is a looming showdown between Honda and Dorna over the Moto GP rules in 2014 that may lead to Honda pulling out of Moto GP. If that happens I think that greatly increases the odds of Honda rejoining Formula 1.
We may get word after this weekend's GP at Motegi.

I can't imagine that Honda would pull out of MotoGP unless Yamaha does as well (Yamaha is not happy about the proposed control ECU either, but has not been as vocal).
I think if Yamaha stays, Honda will find a way to stay in MotoGp on a scaled back basis.
The problem with Formula 1 is that the engines just don't make that much difference, currently. Everything is aero.

The odds for Honda return to F1 went up!
Im at Fuji Raceway for the FIAWEC race and was given the final
2014 LMP1 regs today and the 1.6L V6 turbo can be use in both series.
The 2014 LMP1 will be an unlimited engine formula but will use a fuel flow to equal the engines. So the best engine design for those rules will be to use the least amount of cylinders....
weight and cg reasons and fuel consumption.

I'm pretty sure Honda won't pull out of MotoGP, ever. The reasoning is, for emerging/third world country market like Indonesia or where motorcycle sales are high (India? Vietnam?) Moto GP is an effective campaign for Honda to sell their bikes. At least locally, I can testify the ridiculousness of Yamaha and Honda fans bickers and quarrels over which side has the most advanced bikes. Honda and Yamaha sells bikes with Moto GP deco at premium price and people buys it, the companies even goes as far as putting local language slogans on the Moto GP bikes themselves, Honda with "Satu Hati" (One Heart) and Yamaha with "Semakin di Depan" (Advancing Ahead)... Yamaha, noticed the importance of the Moto GP races, now changed the "Semakin di Depan" tagline with Jupiter Z1, a name of a scooter for Indonesia market.
I don't like these kind of marketing moves though... All those young kids (we don't have particular laws to prohibit underage drivers) drives their scooters like they are on a race or some shit. Many motorcycle related deaths are mostly because of the driver have no patience to merge line or taking corners like they're in a race.
So back to topic. I'm definitely sure Honda won't pull out in the immediate future, standardized ECU and all.

Engine is already designed(single cylinder dyno done).
Just have get the ok from the board(pretty easy because the engine rules "V6 hybrid" fits into Honda's marketing theme)
and McLaren is a WINNER and doesn't want to pay for their engines(starting next year they have to pay Mercedes 8 million a year).

As we are in WTCC subject, it is worth to add that Honda Civic won again with Shedden BTCC crown this year and all the others :))))

One of the great Honda marketing "mysteries"!!
They pull out of racing with all excuses like no money, does not relate to "earth dreams", new products etc. etc.
Yet the BTCC civic uses a tuned K20 - in UK you can buy a 2.2 Diesel MT as the most sporty model.
The succesful Jazz/Fit in Australia Rally, a K20 - you can buy an MT with low spec's.
As much as I like the increase in activity I wonder how the WTCC is planned to help sales???
Might as well do a CR-V with FI V6 MT for Paris Dakar next....
