I sold my Audi A5 privately and bought a 2013 Accord EX-L 4 cyl on 9/20 (got a great deal for my area at the time $26,599 including dest. + $75 doc fee + TTL). I found a small dealership about 50 mi away that had only that one Accord at launch time, 9 miles on it, they still had it across the street in their “bull pen” waiting to get detailed and put on their showroom on 9/19, but I put $500 down over the phone on 9/17 to hold it and not put it out (no test drives, no people crawling all over it, etc).
For those of you intersted in the '13s real world gas mileage: I filled up the tank for the first time last night and I got 28.9 mpg (I calculated it). I’m guessing it was 80% city & 20% hwy
Since I have been a long-time Honda fan, I have so many good things to say about the ’13 Accord. However, I’ve already had a few issues. I hear the first year of a model can have their bugs, but it would’ve been nice to enjoy it for a little while first before the issues started.
Issue #1 - wind noise from both front doors: To be fair, it had this issue when I bought it. Other dealerships were selling for MSRP, $300 off or $500 off (IF you pushed them) at the time and for the great deal I got, I figured they could do some adjusting to the doors and it’d be no big deal.
Issue #2 - dash rattle: This started 48 hrs after bringing the car home. Not sure if it's connected to the audio system issue or just a coincidence. Seems to come from the area left of the steering wheel or somewhere near the gauge cluster area. It rattles maybe 70% of the time, but not sure exactly since I was trying to tune it out and enjoy the car for a bit.
Issue #3 - audio system: **Forgive my description as I don’t know squat about how audio systems work or the terminology**
First happened last Fri 9/28. Started the car at lunch time and you could barely hear what song was playing on XM. Volume was a low percentage of the normal volume it was set at and most of what was coming through the speakers was buzzing/hissing/distortion. Thought it might be an XM issue so tried the radio, same thing. Turned it off for a few mins, but it did the same thing when I turned it back on. I turned it off and left it off on the way to lunch. After lunch, got back in, started the car, turned on the audio and it was back to normal. Called my local Honda dealership about it, but as I suspected, unless they can listen to it when it’s acting up, they really can’t do/say much about it. They said to call them if it happened again.
Didn’t have an audio issue with it again until Mon 10/1. Did it again when I started up the car after work (although not as bad as the previous time), so I called the dealership via the car’s Bluetooth (also had buzzing/hissing/distortion while on the phone but could hear fine). I asked if I could swing over so they could hear it. The service guy that came out agreed right away that it had a problem and put his ears to the front door tweeters. He asked me to put my ear up to both. Neither one had any music coming from it, only buzzing/hissing/few crackles. When I put my ear up to the regular speakers, they seemed like they sounded ok. He said I should drop it off so they could go through all the checks to see what the problem is. He also confessed that the ’13 is so new that he’s not familiar with it at all yet (I figured that’d be the case). As I drove home, the buzzing/hissing/distortion got louder and more intense the more time that passed. It’s seemed ok since then until today coming back to work after lunch…it did it again. I'm dropping it off at the dealership tomorrow morning 10/4.
I’m assuming since it’s intermittent it’s got to be a loose connection somewhere, or a short, or something? Do any of you with more audio knowledge have any ideas? If it matters, it’s the 360-watt system with touch screen, 7 speakers & subwoofer.
So here’s my confession…..I'm freaked out on the inside that my brand new car will be spending who knows how long at the dealership while it’s dash is ripped apart to figure out the rattle and the audio issue. Not to mention, it’ll be the ‘13 guinea pig as no one is familiar with it yet in the service dept. I’m worried that it’ll never quite be the same, or they’ll screw up the dash pieces with pry marks (has happened to me before), etc. I’m probably being stupid for letting it stress me, but I came back to Honda for a vehicle that I could count on and that wouldn’t give me all sorts of issues.
Having said all that though, I do love Hondas. Always have. Even love the new Honda smell. I’ve driven them for more than 12 yrs combined and have two now (3 previous Accords, 2 CRVs, 1 Civic & an Acura MDX if that counts) and still feel like I made the right choice in buying the '13 Accord.
Some of the things I like about the ’13 Accord are: the CVT transmission, the 4 cyl feels nimble/lightweight/free-wheeling around town, the great gas mileage, the more comfortable seats, softer seats/leather, memory seat, improved body style, projector headlights, the keyless lock/unlock feature, can customize all sorts of settings to my preferences, fog lights come standard on the EX-L. I like all the new tech gizmos, but would’ve also been fine without them.
A few things I dislike (or feel it went backwards from previous gens): No 60/40 split rear seat, nice trunk size but usability/access is not that great, no light at the bottom of the front doors (capped off), center armrest doesn’t slide forward, not as much storage, still a little too large, handling seems soft/squishy (but that’s probably because I came from the A5), wearing my polarized sunglasses puts brown splotches on the i-MID/camera screen.
My wishlist: would like the LED DRLs, dual exhaust & homelink on my EX-L (4cyl)
Have any of you early ’13 buyers experienced any issues?
Do any of you have a guess at what the audio issue might be?

If I had to guess, audio issues may be stemming from the active noise cancelationg mic/setup. Also, with most cars, like the 2013 accord, have volume/vehicle speed linked (faster = louder), so that may be why the hissing got louder at speed?

Actually, I did hear a little wind noise when I started a test drive. I even asked the salesmen if all the windows were closed. The car had only 2 miles on it. I had to take the plastic off the visor as I started to drive.
It seems to go away after a while and I disregarded it. I felt it may have been the rubber door protection on the outside or something else used for protecting it from shipping damage.
My Accord is in transit so I don't have my Accord yet.

The only issue that I've encountered so far (and it may not even be an issue) is what I thought was a non-functional subwoofer. The dealer looked at it today and said that it just needs to be adjusted with more "regular" bass so that it gets to the crossover threshold for the subwoofer. (Or something along those lines... I'm not really up on the terminology for car stereos, either). According to a couple of other sources, it's indeed a possibility, so I now have a couple of things to try. I didn't take the car in myself, so I won't get to confirm this until I get home from work.
No other radio problems, no rattles so far, and mine is pretty quiet... no problem with wind noise, and road noise is considerably improved over previous Accords, but the noise that I do hear is primarily the latter. A bit more engine noise as well, but I went from a V-6 to an I4, so that's to be expected. The wind noise thing does surprise me, because with this being my 5th Accord, that's one area with which I never had problems.
Hope you can get your issues fixed without too much grief... I certainly understand what you're going through...

That could make sense. I was driving all city streets (low speeds) after work on the way to the dealership and took the highway home after the dealership (65+).
After I get it back from the dealership, I'll update this thread with what they found out/the fix in case anyone else runs into it.

Thought I’d post a follow-up to the few problems I’ve had with my ’13 Accord since it spent yesterday at the dealership. As these things are resolved, I’ll post updates in this thread in case it’ll help someone else who might run into the same things.
Issue #1 - wind noise from both front doors
The service guy said they drove the car around while taping off different areas around the front doors/windows each time to figure out where the wind noise is coming from. They found what’s causing it and have ordered a new door sash for both front doors.
If you stand outside the car and look at the driver’s door, it’s the black vertical piece of plastic to the right of the drivers window. It’s a few inches wide and is as tall as the window. As the car moves, the air was hitting between the window glass and this piece. The service guy said Honda had heard of this already and suggested the new sashes.
Issue #2 - dash rattle
They think they fixed this by tightening the A pillar and the airbag cover. Driving home, I thought it was gone, but I started to hear it again, just not as bad. Since they tighted the airbag cover, I reached through the steering wheel and sort of held the back edge of the airbag cover a bit while I was driving straight to see if that was where the noise is coming from. I think it might be since I didn't hear it while I held the edge up off whatever piece that's under it. I’ll see how it goes the next few days while I wait for parts to arrive and it goes back in anyway. Not a big deal as I’m sure it'll get fixed. I really thought it was coming from the dash instead of the steering wheel. Rattles can be deceiving.
Issue #3 - audio system
They’re sort of at a loss on this one as it didn’t act up while it was there yesterday (they know it’s intermittent). The good thing is that the service guy I’m working with knows it has a problem because he heard it on Monday when I drove it over there. He said he’s not sure where the problem is (he’s keeps mentioning the tweeters though) and that the connection to the tweeters seems fine (that was about all they were able to get to). I thought they were going to take the dash apart to check everything out, but it doesn’t sound like they did that and I didn’t press it. He also said the audio unit itself is a sealed unit and something the service dept does not ever open or work on/repair per Honda. So first he wants to replace both tweeters (ordered them). Then give it some time to see if the problem starts up again. If it does, he’ll order an entire new audio unit to see if that’ll fix it. I forgot to ask if he thought it might have anything to do with the active noise cancellation, but I’ll try to remember when I take it back next week.
They should have the sashes and tweeters by early next week. I’ll drop it off either Tues or Wed and will update again after I pick it up.

Hi Sterling,
Could you give me the number to the dealer and/or a link to the recommendation from Honda to replace the door sashes. I would also like to do this as it is really the only majour flaw with this vehicle's interior quality.

Nevermind, I went talked to the dealer and one of his genius technicians figured a way to make the door fit tighter to the car frame, thus reducing the wind noise considerably.

Thank you for reporting and providing thorough updates regarding issues you have with your new baby!
I would advise to be PATIENT and unless you have issues with the major parts (engine, CVT, etc.) try NOT to be to eager to fix this minor problems.
You have been 'guinea pig' once - buying a redesigned car in its first months of life; you basically paid THEM to trouble shoot new product; do not be even bigger 'guinea pig' letting mechanics getting free training and experimenting with your brand new car.
Drive the car; enjoy new technology and new toys; go through 4-5 tanks of gas; break it properly; report real gas mileage (calculating by hand); let us know how CVT, direct injection behaves.
Ignore little issues for few months.

I've also experienced the audio issue but only one time after owning the car for 3 weeks also an EX-L. Turning the car off for about 5 minutes fixed the problem.
I would describe the sound as extreme distortion with the upper frequencies centered around 3khz. Seems to me it's at the digital level. It effects all source inputs. If you really want to hear it, find an fm frequency with a lot of static and it you'll notice it for sure. I really doubt the new tweeters will fix it, but who knows maybe they have some kind of amp built in. It also affected the noise canceling, as I noticed a little more road noise. I would have never noticed the problem if I hadn't turned up the radio to listen to a favorite song. I suspect many people would have no idea it is actually occuring.
I also agree the subwoofer setting does very little change to the output of low frequencies.
I'm not worried much at this time, everything else has been great. Going to take the wait and see approach.
Some audio advice: I bought a used 3rd generationiPod touch off eBay and loaded it with my music collection (26 GB) and leave it connected to the USB all the time. (Its actually a carryover from my 2009 Civic with NAV) The Accord will show the album art and has a nice cover flip on the touch screen similar to what's built into the touch. It's also very fast at music searching. Although I haven't found a way to access the track list of an album that is currently playing.
Ive already ordered and installed the mud guards and door sills from College Hill Honda. At the time they didn't have the Home link, but it looks like I'll get around to ordering it soon enough.

I have had a 2013 V6 touring since Thursday 10/11. I have put about 800 miles on it already. The only problem that I think I have is with the audio system. The FM reception is horrible and the bass of the sound system is not too great either... Does anyone else have this going on?

I'm having the same wind noise problem on the driver's side of my 2013 Accord -- it sounds like I'm driving with the window slightly cracked. I've had the car for two weeks and it's at the dealer for a third time to fix the noise problem. So far they've replaced the weather stripping and adjusted the door. Beware of door adjustments: I had the door adjusted on my Nissan Maxima to make it fit tighter. It altered the airfloor around the car so that over time, road grit sandblasted the paint off the area by the rear mudflap. Nissan paid to have the paint repaired a few years later and re-adjusted the door so the problem wouldn't recur.

I noticed this with my TL and I called the previous owner who stated that she never used the stereo at all. After a few weeks the stereo sounded much better. Like a car I think the speakers need to break in.

Have had to run a couple of errands around the area (take some papers to a customer's work to get re-signed, drop off a second key to another customer) and have taken a 2013 (EXL once, EXL V6 the second time) off the lot to get the feel of things and get more familiarized with the new tech. I have not noticed the wind noise, but my one disappointment has been with the stereo system. I own a 2011 EXL V6 sedan and it felt much tinnier than mine, even after adjusting the bass and the sub woofer up a good bit. Interesting that others are experiencing the same thing.

I wonder what frequencies the noise cancellation is set at, could be a major problem??
See if you can find out what range it's canceling at, actual (Hz) not general (Low-Mid-High)?

I know I felt from Pluto on this planet and I still do not get some human behavior...
I am just wandering WHY car stereo is so important to some folks?
Aren't you suppose to PAY ATTENTION on the road and jerks around you instead of blasting 5000W of some music with open windows?
I personally enjoy QUIET ride and do not care for quality or wattage of provided music system. In rare occurrences on a long ride through unpopulated area I might turn on radio/cd player/whatever but even then watching for moose, deer, rabbits, foxes, alligators precedes creature comfort of listening some underage bitch screeching of losing virginity to her father or similar highly intelligent lyrics found in American songs...

Good for you,,you are "watching for moose, deer, rabbits, foxes, alligators" do you really think your alone and the Millions of drivers on the road daily are not looking out for whatever on the road.

How's the imaging with the stereo systems? Ever since the 2008 Accord went with tweeters in the sail panels, the music sounds like it's coming from the driver door rather than spread across the front of the car. Thought the stereo was better in my 06 than my 08.
