The new Car and Driver (July) has a complete TSX test. They loved it! 0 to 60 was 7.2 (with a burning clutch). I have never read an article that has summed my driving impressions so precisely. I hope you enjoy it.

It's a great review. Of all the mags that I subscribe to I have always had the most respect for the guys at Car and Driver. Probably because they tend to tell it like it is more so than the other rags. Congrats to Honda/Acura for bringing over the JDM Accord. Hopefully with the success of the TSX Honda/Acura will no longer dumb down vehicles for our market. Now I really can't wait to see what Acura has up its sleeve with the new TL and RL.

C&D were somewhat negative about the TSX in the APR03 preview. I was surprised to see the 180 after the test drive.
I like C&D, though I tend to get tired of the constant comparison to the 3-series, specifically the TSX preview article. The TSX is less expensive, 4cy, and front wheel drive....why they would compare it to the 3-series is beyond me...

Check the discussions we had here back then. A lot of people took C/D's preview article as negative, but I took it as "tongue in cheek". As I've probably mentioned before, at the TSX press intro in January, the members of the press were uncharacteristically enthusiastic about the car. Moreso than I've witnessed at the other events. There were 3 "waves" of journalists, and I was in the middle (I think?). The first night I was there, our dinner overlapped with the previous wave, and EVERYBODY was extremely positive about the car. All the Acura PR guys wore shit-eating grins because all they heard were good things from the attendees. Then our group drove the car the next day. And all day long I heard nothing but good stuff from everybody. At the other events I've attended, there were invariably people who were not 100% impressed, but this time, it was literally unanimous.
So anyhow, I guess since I had that experience, the C/D preview article just didn't sound all that negative to me. The way I read it, the author was bashing the automotive press in general for mindlessly lauding heaps of praise on the 3-series (yes, it is deserving of much of it, but maybe they're saing that sometimes people might get carried away).

that's because the preview was based on paper and the review was based on the track. If i recall correctly, one of the editor opinions was that you need to drive it to believe it, because paper numbers just don't do the car justice. Acura was the one who claimed the TSX competed with the 3-series (and it does the 325i in value), so C/D had to mention it

Ok, all I am is saying is that after I read this article, IMO, it sounded like they [C&D] were not impressed with the car.
Taken from the APR 03 article
************************************************************************
This makes it an utter failure as a tool of 3-series worship and yet something altogether more interesting than another copy. In its hunt for the 3-series, Acura has inadvertently conjured up the spirit of the old Nissan Maxima. Here we refer to the '89 through '94 models to which Nissan affixed "4DSC" stickers (for "four-door sports car"), not the softer, larger cars that followed. The TSX is the car for those who need space, want fun, and haven't the money for an impressive badge.
************************************************************************
Despite its general handiness, the TSX can conceal its front-drive nature for only so long. Drive really hard, and the 3-series posing fades quicker than the front tires' grip on the pavement.
************************************************************************
So forget all the BMW-fighter stuff and be thankful for the return of this particularly satisfying brand of Japanese sports sedan. Like we said: an utter failure at being a BMW copy.

yeah, that was the preview, it sounded negative to me too but when they actually reviewed the car they really, really liked it.

Even in April, they liked it. They wanted to make the point that it was not a 3-series copy. In fact, they compared it to Maxima SE '89-94 which they loved.
