I just filled up the tank so I was able to get my first real MPG figures. I filled it just when the low fuel light came on, so it was a pretty complete fill. It came out to 30.0 mpg exactly, coincidentally matching the combined EPA figure. I'd say the mix was about 15% city, 40% suburban and 45% highway. And I'd say that my driving style was fairly average... mostly my usual 5-10 over the limit, with a few short episodes of pushing it fairly hard to check out the handling on curves. Weather was pretty typical for early fall in southern Wisconsin... temps in the low 40s to mid 60s, so I didn't have much A/C usage. Very happy with those figures... I'd guess that my previous 2011 EX-L V6 would have gotten about 23 mpg with that type of driving.
And what about the trip computer? I wasn't expecting much from an accuracy standpoint, so I was pleasantly surprised... it showed 30.1 mpg. I'll have to keep checking it to see if it routinely comes up with such accurate figures. If it does, I had one stretch that was about 90% highway, and traveling at 65 - 70 mph, the trip computer was showing just over 38 mpg for that trip! The best real world figures that I got with the V6 was just a hair under 30 mpg on extended trips with mostly interstate driving, so the new I4 looks as if it has the potential to provide a big increase.
I haven't seen any real world figures for the Altima, but there's no doubt in my mind that the Accord I4 will be seriously in the hunt for best in class MPG.

WOW, it get's the same mileage as my 2000 EX 5MT Accord. Good to see that they have come a long way in the past 12 years.

This is good feedback. I have seen that under the new EPA reporting that the combined is usually spot on to mixed driving. Our last 2011 Accord EXL got exactly 27 which is what the sticker said. That said it looks like the 10% fuel economy improvement is real. I have to wonder now though if the accuracy statement stands for the 6MT or if we actualy see much better than expected.
I am also curious to see what the V6 does. 25mpg is the target however in my 06 6MT is have averaged 28.6mpg over 94k miles. I was hoping that if I do have to go with an auto car this time that I could at least have the same fuel economy.

What kind of driving pattern? (city? highway? hills? prairie? etc.)
Fuelly's average for the 2000 Accord is around 25-26 MPG: http://www.fuelly.com/car/honda/accord/2000
My '94 Accord LX 5MT, which used the same basic F22 engine design as the 6G, but without VTEC, generally returned about 24-25 MPG in a mix of suburban and highway driving with somewhat hilly topography. In pure local driving, I saw 22-23 MPG, and on pure highway trips, 31-33 MPG. 30 MPG combined for the 9G Accord is great. This is close to what one would expect from an 8G Civic 1.8L, which is a substantially lighter and slimmer vehicle.

my 2000 SE still gets 32 on HWY, but around town I only get 21-22 (true city driving). I never really drive mixed, but i guess I'd fall around 25-26mpg. so getting 30 in mixed driving, ~40 more HP, a bunch more torque, more space and a ton more features. I'd say that's pretty good advancement.

No, I didn't. I'll probably try it eventually.

Not to mention the safety gained from compliance with stricter crash standards, which adds more than a little weight. I agree that considering this and the factors that you mentioned, it *is* a pretty good advancement.

If I go on a long trip 400+ miles and put he car in cruise at 75, I'll get around 35 MPG. A combination of city/highway mileage typically nets me 30 mpg. I use cruise control even for short trips on the highway, usually set it at 70 MPH.

What type of driving?
What about the vast improvement in features and safety performance? Much weight added since you car. Improved overall utility.

Granted there are safety improvements and more appealing looks, but I don't see anything in the new car that I need. Mac struts, CVT's, and ton's of gagets that can take your mind away from the business of driving, probably balance out the safety features. I don't need a car that is a rolling home entertainment center.

I know I am in the minority, but 95% of my daily driving is in the city. I get 1 to 2 mpg less than the city estimates on every car I've owned. If I get 25 MPG with this new Accord, then I will be very satisfied as I have not done that in an automatic that performs as well as the Accord. Not every car is for every driver, but this one seems to suit me very well.
