A company called CPT recently unveiled two new concepts, as I read in this month's Automotive Engineering magazine from SAE.

The first is a TIGERS (turbo generator integrated gas energy recovery system), which in simple terms means that it's a turbo that has a generator rather than a compressor.

However, the concept is meant to be a partial replacement for the alternator, as it generates 6 kW of power and has a controllable bypass (not really a wastegate) for when operation is desired.

The second is essentially the other way around, an electric supercharger named VTES (Variable Torque Enhancement System)

This isn't really a supercharger that you know of right now, rather it's an "assist" technology for emissions and low end torque. Obviously greater airflow would help with torque, but the system can be used to purge the EGR system and ease particulates during transient throttle usage in diesel engines.

Obviously these systems aren't meant to substitute current force induction methods, but I think it's pretty interesting from an engineering perspective. Whether these devices will lead to better efficiency and emissions in real life remains to be seen. If we go by what usually happens in the automotive industry, BMW will start using these devices in their engines (which will shortly be followed by a recall), and others will start using it after it's been significantly refined and improved.
