A Ford 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine set a Nürburgring lap time of 7:22 — which Ford claims is quicker than laps set on the same course by supercars like Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari Enzo.

"This particular 1.0-liter engine has been tuned to put out 202 horsepower, making this feat of beating the aforementioned supercars around the 'Ring even more impressive. The Formula Ford EcoBoost also has an unofficial top speed of 158.8 miles per hour, can get from zero to 60 mph in less then four seconds and can achieve 118 miles per gallon... at 35 mph."

118 mpg! 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds, top speed 158.8 mph. Meaningless, yes but Ford fans remember numbers and will run to dealers to get their Focus or Fiesta with the Ferrari beating engine, don't you think?

I'm sure the engine will last just fine. But while the article claims the car was street legal, well, good luck with that. It's a freakin race car with some light sponsons attached.

You should be qualified to answer this question: is this how marketers think?

Seems like this is how Ford and Hyundai marketers think.

Did everyone suddenly forget the marketing materials for the K20 Si or the "One" commercials linking Hondajet and their motorsports to the Accord?

Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday has been around forever and I don't think touting an engine's potential or lineage is disingenuous. It's one the good things about Ford. They've put a ton of money into motorsports and get every marketing drop out of it.

Racing is hidden to the average Honda buyer, even though many of the things that going on under the hood of their cars started there. Honda should have commercials, releases and short films about the Realtime Racing TSX, and the racing Fit and CRZs. Racing has and still is a feather in Honda's cap and they should use it.

Marketing is by far Honda's weakest link, if that link is even there.

In "non professional" motorsport a lightly modded ITR K20 with aftermarket exhaust and ECU is a comfortably better race motor than most other manufacturers full, race built motors :)

Makes me wonder what's the definition of road legal, in the minds of some automakers?

Does it has CARB approved cat?

Or a NHTSA approved bumper? I think not.

Doesn't Honda offer a few street-legal, 1-seater vehicles with sub-1 liter engines which would stomp that Ford? Alas, with just two tires.

You can get a Honda powered two-seater with 4 wheels that should stomp it too. 0-60mph in 2.9sec. See. it is street legal too, with lights and fenders just like the Ford.

While it may be "street legal", it is not an approved vehicle for the street. Meeting legal requirements for the street doesn't mean it has passed all the certifications required of it. It's probably street-legal in the sense that it has the required lighting, signalling and mirrors and the motor meets emissions and therefore COULD be driven on the street....if they went through the process. I am positive they haven't actually done the process of legalizing it formally.

I know, I know, it's just how Ford like to promote their thing, throw out something and rumors spread, people remembering 0-60 time, top-speed, beat Ferrari at Nurburgring with 3 cyl. 1.0L Eco Boost engine with street legal vehicle.

Somehow they manage to market/appeal to people who like salesmen in oversized clothing...which baffles me.

Honda uses RPA for their advertisement and marketing, and I agree it's their weakest link. It's certainly one bond I wouldn't mind seeing broken.
