why does my accord 93 struggles to go up on moderate hill ?
I can see the engine rev up to 4000 rpm but the speed hardly go past 40km/hr. I am very frustrated with this car.
Is it much too old ?

Since your Hondabaru is Gerbil powered, I suggest giving the little fella' some Red Bull energy drink.

You might have mentioned this before, but what's the mileage on the car. It's certainly a 19 year-old car so that may have something to do with it. I'm thinking something in the tranny slips uphill, causing the engine to rev, and some rev delivery getting lost in some type of actuators or clutches inside the tranny? I know nothing about these things, but thats the impression I get. Because theoretically, if the car is supposed to be going at X speed at 4000rpm under a certain gear, on an uphill it should technically take longer to get to 4000rpm, and thus take longer to get to the speed you want, however, if it is getting to 4000rpm in the gear that you like in a reasonable time-frame, and yet the car isn't moving as fast as it should at 4000rpm on that gear. then some revs are getting lost somewhere. If your car is stick, it can easily be the clutch slipping and thus some of your revs are getting "neutralized".

I used to had an older one than yours and it can go uphill faster better than that. Go have your automatic / clutch checked. Aslo check your oil, air filter and sparkplugs while there.

Sounds like clutch slippage.

Make sure that the car is in gear. I am going to assume it is running. Then make sure you are pressing the "go" pedal. It's the one on the far right.

This kind of one liner is very difficult to understand. Best if you describe in more details, including the condition of the car etc, and whether it has been serviced properly, when, and so forth. I know this sounds like an old record but you might want to take a video, from the drivers seat, of this 'struggling to go uphill' to properly explain just what you mean because from what I remember in previous threads, often the threads goes nowhere simply because there isn't enough information for people here to really help.

I'm with P54. If the engine revs up while you're driving a manual shift car in high gear, especially while driving up hills, it's clutch slippage. The two possible explanations both point to clutch replacement. My advice would be to buy the parts from Honda if you want the clutch feel to be exactly the same.

Picard, if this is the problem, you will probably also be smelling the fragrant aroma of burning clutch as you go up the hill!
:)

my oil filter, oil are ok. how much would it cost to fix the autotransmission ? is this going to bankrupt me ?

It will probably cost nearly as much as the car is worth to repair or replace the transmission, including parts and labor, but I'm not sure what the prices are like in Canada.
Since it sounds like the trans is slipping, adding thicker fluid or one of those "miracle" transmission liquids will be a band-aid for a little while.

The last time that happened to my Accord it happened (happened only once after I bought it used), and I happened to find a guy who can actually repair a Hondamatic 4 speed. All that needed replacement is some seal and clutch-things that look like really big washers. It did not cost too much considering what I got it for. Yours might be different.
You can try the thicker liquid but it probably is not going to last forever that way. Suggest you start finding a junk part replacement or someone who can fix it for reasonable money. Or change to manual. Or maybe time for a new car.

Assuming it is your automatic... it could be your spark plugs or air filter too
