I am the original owner of # 834. Unfortunately, it has developed a problem. Approximately 20k ago it blew a head gasket. My mechanic resurfaced the head and replaced the head gasket. It blew that gasket approximately 3,500k later. At that time, the mechanic recomended replacing the head bolts, again the head was resurfaced and the head gasket was replace this time at his cost. Guess what, it has now blown another head gasket. He now believes that the block has heaved a cylinder liner and requires a complete rebuild. Considering that the engine has 165k, I guess this should not be too surprising - but the engine has always been maintained and never abused.
Anyway, the engine requires a complete rebuild. The mechanic is going to assume the cost of the head rebuild and I will have the responsibility of the block.
This is my question. While the engine is apart, are there any good, cost efffective modifications that I should have performed. I have heard that porting and polishing the head is probably the best modification. If so, what is the best shop to do this for a day driving street application?
When considering your modification reccomendations please consider that I am a 52 year old banker and not a street racer. In other words, I looking for reliable performance, not smoke from under my front wheel wells!
Thanks
