Nice views of the factory in the video.

Go Earth Dreams!

I like what that guy in the factory said: "We've spent a lot of time, energy, and money designing and building what we consider to be the benchmark midsize sedan."!

How will the new Accord drive?

Jordan Burgess
RUSSELLS POINT, Ohio (WDTN) - If the trip down the street is as smooth as the trip down the assembly line, then you'll have nothing to complain about.

"We want to get it to market as soon as possible," says Honda's Anna Engine Plant Manager John Spoltman.

Honda's new Accord isn't due out until next month but already the work on what's going underneath the hood has started in the Miami Valley.

"We feel this is our comeback," Spoltman says. "A lot of people are questioning Honda out in the market."

What's powering that comeback is the new Earth Dreams Technology being used for the engines produced at the Anna Plant and the Transmissions being made in Russells Point.

2 NEWS is told Earth Dreams is designed to improve fuel efficiency by 10 percent, so if you're buying 20 gallons of gas a week, this will save you two.

"We've really balanced that fuel efficiency and maintained that sporty feeling customers like in Hondas," says Denis Kovacs, the Accord Engine New Model Leader.

But those at Honda say what you won't feel are the car's shifts. That's because Earth Dreams includes what's called a Continuously Variable Transmission

It's meant to make for a smoother trip.

"You won't have shifting from one gear to the next gear," says Michael Fagan with Honda Transmission Manufacturing.

Those at Honda are hoping the Accord makes for an easy drive because a lot is riding on it.

"We've put a lot of time money and effort into what we consider to be the benchmark sedan," Fagan says.

Wow, this was their top story?

Anyway, this quote says it all: "We feel this is our comeback," Spoltman says. "A lot of people are questioning Honda out in the market."

I wonder how much of this statement was a personal statement or something cooked up by Honda PR... Still, seems Honda knows they can't afford to drop the ball with this Accord, glad to see that. Now, ED and this CVT need to meet/exceed expectations.

As an employee at Honda, I can tell you this is not PR fluff! We have been bad mouthed for a couple of years now, and we are personally sick and tired of hearing it. We've put a lot of time and effort behind the 9th generation Accord even with all of the obstacles (earthquake/tsunami and Thailand flooding). I think people will be pretty happy with the results!

Truly looking forward to it, despite my reservations about the DBW thing!

Is Honda unveiling everything, including full specs and MSRPs on Monday? If so, when do you think Honda will put the info out there? If not, is September 5th still the embargo date?

Good to hear.

I think it's going to be a really impressive car all ways around—in terms of performance, safety, comfort, equipment, everything. And I proud that it's built in Ohio—down the engine and transmission. I'm likely to be quite interested in buying at some point....

Another newspaper article: http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/08/2013_honda_accord_gets_news_en.html

Some interesting details about the CVT manufacturing operation:

Because of the demanding nature of CVTs, Russels Point expansion project manager Michael Fagan said the company had to build a clean room in the plant. Like in many hospitals, the air in the transmission assembly area is heavily filtered and workers entering the room have to pass through high-pressure wind jets to clean any dust off of them.
"We have a 20-micron clearance on our moving parts]," Fagan said, adding that that's about the width of some human hairs. "Contamination is one of the biggest challenges of a CVT."

and:

Between the gloves and the white uniforms worn by assembly workers, the Honda transmission assembly area could be mistaken for a bio-medical lab. Unlike the noisy, oily areas where the plant's workers make traditional transmissions, the CVT clean room is quiet and rigorously climate controlled.

I'm eagerly anticipating Monday's coverage. I'm getting a good vibe so far!

Very cool!

However, it sounds like the CVT is so sensitive it will not be serviceble?

"Our customers expect performance," Spoltman said, adding that the new small engine will be powerful. "How to get that performance with fuel economy is the challenge."

Sounds like everyone at Honda understands that practical performance and reliability are part of their DNA and what drive the core Honda following.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you are correct. If a CVT must be built in a very clean, precise environment, I don't think the vast majority of dealer service departments and independent repair shops would be able to service it.

I think that in the event of transmission failure, there would have to be a straight out swap of the bad CVT with a completely new unit from the factory.

The bad part of course would be cost... but there are benefits too. Getting a brand new factory unit has less room for error. In transmission repair, the problem could be misdiagnosed, or the repair could be done wrong. I've seen cars that go back to the dealer 2, 3 or more times because of this. Swapping in a new CVT I think the customer is more likely to have it just work on the first try.

CVT Program Details

Dear Nissan Owner:

On behalf of everyone at Nissan, we would like to thank you for choosing to drive a Nissan. One of the many technologically-advanced features of your vehicle is the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), an innovative transmission that offers smooth, seamless shifting, while tailoring the vehicle's output to your driving style.

While Nissan is proud to offer this technology on many of our models, a small percentage of owners of early models equipped with CVTs have expressed concerns about the cost of repair of their transmissions after the warranty expires. We take these comments about the cost of vehicle ownership seriously. We strive to provide an exceptional ownership experience and are implementing a thorough Customer Satisfaction Program to address this topic.

First, to provide you with additional assurance regarding your overall cost of ownership we have doubled the warranty period for the Continuously Variable Transmission in your Nissan. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles will be extended at no cost to you, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, to 10 years/120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

This extension is effective immediately and requires no action on your part. The remainder of your powertrain warranty coverage for components other than the transmission remains unchanged, at 5 years/60,000 miles, and your basic warranty coverage also remains unchanged. All other warranty terms, limitations and conditions otherwise apply. This extended transmission warranty is also fully transferable to future owners of your vehicle.

Second, Nissan will reimburse customers who have previously paid to repair or replace their CVT, if the repairs would have been covered within the new extended warranty period. Even if you no longer own your Nissan we will reimburse you for past CVT repairs that would have been covered under this extension of the warranty.

Further, in the unlikely event that your vehicle's transmission should need repair beyond the extended warranty period we are working to decrease the cost of repair and have already reduced the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of a replacement CVT. In addition, we continuously strive to enhance our products, and have made ongoing improvements to our CVTs over the years.

Nissan is taking these actions to demonstrate our confidence in the CVT technology and to show our commitment to stand behind our products.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

The extended warranty coverage for CVT repair or replacement is effective immediately.

If you seek coverage for a repair under this extended warranty you will need to bring your vehicle to an authorized Nissan dealer. The factory-trained technical staff at the Nissan dealer will have the diagnostic tools and knowledge to provide you with the appropriate service and submit your warranty claim. If you have additional questions regarding this program, contact Nissan Consumer Affairs at 800-647-7261 for assistance.

At Nissan we and our dealers work daily to deliver an outstanding ownership experience that will earn your confidence and trust. We are committed to doing the right thing for our customers and look forward to a long relationship that you find satisfying and rewarding. Thank you for choosing Nissan.

Sincerely,
Kevin Martin
Vice President Total Customer Satisfaction

This Consumer Reimbursement Program ended on 07/31/2010. For questions or concerns please contact Nissan Consumer Affairs at 1800NISSAN1 (1-800-647-7261).
