By then we will know the prices of the 2013 Accord. But would anyone care to guess now? With all new engines, transmissions, features, etc., I think we can guess that there will be at least a 1k increase, and probably more. But competition from Toyota, Nissan, VW and Hyundai will keep prices down...
Here are some current msrp's for models without dest...
2012 Accord LX: 21,480
2012 Camre LE: 22,600
2013 Altima S: 22,500
2013 Sonata: 20,895
2013 Passat: 20,845
Here are my guesses...
2013 Accord LX 6 MT 22,800+ dest 900
2013 Accord LX CVT 23,600+ dest 900
I think the 2013 Accord, because of the lavish level of equipment, will be a shade higher than comparable Altima and Camry models. It will still be an amazing value, because many things standard on the Accord (back up camera, etc.) will only be available as expensive options on the competition.
Passat undercuts significantly, but it has an old tech engine, lower mileage, a 5 speed manual, etc.

current mpg #s
2012 Accord: 23/34
2013 Sonata: 24/35
2012 Camry: 25/35
2013 Passat: 21/32
2013 Altima: 27/38
A guess...
A few years ago the Sonata surprised everyone with its high mpg. But now Altima has topped that by quite a bit. I hope the Accord can equal the Altima, but I'm not sure about that. I'm hoping that the 2013 Accord will be 27 city and 38 hwy.
That's basically the same mpg as the Civic, which seems pretty tough to achieve. But the Civic doesn't have the earth dreams engine or transmission....

I think the initial price increase will be much less. Maybe 3-500.00. But we will see another similar increase possibly January. Information gleaned from mt crystal ball.

Oh surely it's got to be more than 500. They've added features that will cost Honda at least 1000 to produce. But if it is only 500 or so that would be very aggressive. Honda would be out "value pricing" Sonata if it's that low.

Where will the 2013 Honda Accord be best in class or equal to the best in class for the midsize segment?
I've got one already: visibility. The 2013 Accord will have best in class visibility. And it will be one of the few sedans where you can actually roll down your rear windows almost all the way.
In safety the Accord will also be best in class or equal to the best.
In mpg I'm hoping they can equal the best in class Altima. But Nissan did an awesome job and so that's a tough challenge.
In interior room I think the Accord will also be best in class.

Huge over-simplification - we have no idea of overall production costs - sourcing more chinese components, improved manufacturing processes, EPS instead of hydraulic, no dbw, and so forth. While Honda will aim to reduce production costs, just like every manufacturer, price is almost solely determined by market conditions. They aim to sell a certain number and will price and incentivize it accordingly. That one piece dash may cost far less to make once all the assembly equipment is set up. Of course if it is obviously better equipped and a better car than its competition then it can stand a price increase. In the US anyway. I am not expecting any price increase in Canada. Accords don't sell anyway. For six straight years prices have come down. But they are still generally above US apart from Civic.

What "lavish" equipment will the Accord LX have that is so special? Rear-view camera is pretty nice for an entry level model and possibly dual-zone a/c as well, but the rest should be standard.

What the wizard said, plus state-the-art all-new engines and transmissions, an even more robust and safe ACE body, etc...

And although the Accord has admittedly been behind the times for a couple of years, it previously was that you had to get an EXL to get bluetooth. But now it's standard. I realize that VW, Hyundai, and others already got there first, but still it's nice stuff for the LX.
My 2002 Accord LX was a very good car. It was well built but pretty basic. It didn't have abs, and frankly it felt a lot less solid than our almost tank-like 2008 Accord. The dash of the 02 was simple and functional and well made, but frankly underwhelming for today's expectations.
I think the 2013 Accord is going to exceed most reasonable people's expectations when it comes to the level of equipment...

You're right that we only have a vague idea of costs. But we can guess. And you can be sure that the Honda engineer knows what each feature actually costs them down to the last dollar for each car. I read an interview a few years ago with a KIA engineer or exec (I forget which), and the interviewer praised the rear suspension of the Optima. The KIA guy was thrilled, because he had helped personally lobby for spending something like $312 per car (I don't remember the exact figure, I'm just making it up, but it was something like that) in order to make the suspension better. To him a few hundred per car was HUGE, and he was glad that someone noticed it.
Now for the Accord you can guess that a camera and a video screen alone probably cost at the very least a few hundred bucks.
Moving each of the wheels from steel with plastic hubcaps (like my 02 LX had) to alloy wheels costs maybe $50 a tire.
The all-new engine costs billions to develop, and is more expensive to manufacture because it's DI. Say $500 added value there.
Ditto for the 6 speed MT and the CVT, although maybe that's only 300 a car??
Climate control? No idea, but a couple of hundred bucks probably more complicated and expensive than a simple dial.
What are all the other features? I forget right now. But I hear they are using even more ultra high grade steel in the new ACE body than in the last gen (which already used a lot!). High grade steel is more expensive. Couple hundred bucks a car??
etc. What were the other features...?
I think it adds up to over 1000 easy. Even for Honda. But I admit that's just a guess. Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think body colored mirrors and auto on/off lights count as "lavish". Most everyone has body color mirrors. This isn't the 1980's....
Again, some of the other features are really nice to have in an entry level vehicle, but hardly "lavish". It's about damn time Honda offered something since the Accord came with virtually nothing unless you opted for an EX-L.

Yep. Sure the screen must cost more than the electroflourescent thing most current accords have but screen cost has dramatically come down. The camera bit costs pennies, just a cheap lens and sensor and part of a redesigned wiring loom.
In 2010 the MMC CRV EX in Canada added a nicer stereo, auto headlights, power seat, more powerful engine, USB, body coloured mirrors and door handles, centre console box, dual zone climate control, illuminated mirrors, and more. And the price came down.
As consumers we see progress in terms of cars getting better each year and with more features. But progress for the manufacturers is just as much in reducing manufacturing cost. Cars are cheaper in real terms than ever before despite all the technology that has been added. It is little short of miraculous how cheap they are when you consider how many components are involved, all the rigorous standards they all have to meet, and how incredibly reliable all modern cars are. People sometimes pay as much for a dining table and chairs as they do for a car....probably better analogies out there.
