The first thing that came to mind when I first saw the taillights was the rear of the 6th generation model and not that of the Genesis (although the use of LEDs make them look somewhat similar).

The global model of the 6th gen differs slightly from the US model:

Because it has to accommodate the long license plates used in many countries.

------------------

The same is true with the refreshed 8th gen model. This is what the 2011-2 model released in the Middle East looks like:

And this is what the US model looks like:

Starting with the 2012 model, all Accords released in the Middle East are made in the US (all previous models were made in Japan despite the 8th gen model being completely based on the US design); a byproduct of the strong yen, I suppose.

So it seems to me that Honda is trying to minimize their cost by releasing one design that can accommodate long license plates even though the US market don't use them.

Just a thought :)

The wider license plate area could just be for use in the new JDM Inspire.

Not sure if this is premium-looking enough for a global Accord (aka TSX). If the new TLX will be sized between the current TSX/TL, it's possible that may be the new global Accord instead.

Of course this means the TLX chassis would need to support a diesel and N/A 4-cyl engine...which hopefully will not be an option in the US.
