From Autonews.com:
| The U.S. organization will engineer and develop the new-generation Acura NSX sports car, the redesign of the current Civic at the end of this year, the next-generation Accord wagon and Accord coupe and "a few Acura models," says Erik Berkman, the new president of Honda R&D Americas. |
Also, freep.com says HMC has given Honda R&D Americas full responsibility for developing the 10th generation Civic.
TRAVERSE CITY – The next generation of the Honda Civic sedan and coupe for sale in the U.S. will be developed in North America, said Erik Berkman, president of Honda R&D Americas.
The decision was made by global top management last month, Berkman said at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars here. |

Accord wagon? does that mean the TSX wagon is going bye bye? Or do they mean Honda America will design the Accord Euro wagon?

I think we'll lease a '13 TSX wagon and buy it when it comes off lease... Accords are just not as nice as TSXs.
Now, a TL Wagon, NOW, that would be a killer car. I might even pop the dough for a TL Wagon TECH SH-AWD V6 MT6... hmmm...

That's the point of Acura right? I hope for $10K more the TSX is nicer....

$10K? Unless they do a stripped down version, we'll be lucky if an Accord wagon stickers even 5k below the TSX Sport Wagon. Heck, right now an Accord EX-L is only about $2K apart from the TSX sedan.

A 9th gen Accord Wagon...
Something tells me it will look rather bulky.
And what of the Crosstour? What will happen to it?

The writing is on the wall for the TSX, because it is too similar to the TL in size. I'm 99% certain that Acura intends to merge the TSX and the TL into the TLX.
I also think that Honda will dump the Crosstour. The Crossfail never lived up to sales expectations, and made Honda the laughing stock of Facebook for months. A true Accord Wagon with optional 4WD is the only way to take on the Subaru Outback, which is absolutely destroying the Crossfail in sales.

The Crosstour got 8000 orders in April from China. Maybe it will sell better overseas than in USA?

That is indeed pretty interesting news.
On one hand, and in line with recent Honda announcements of an increasing US role, I'm not surprised about the Civic development, since it seems that Japan has definitively killed it, so it doesn't really make much sense to develop and make a product you are not even selling at home.
On the other side, the Accord Wagon comes as a (welcome) surprise. Who knows, the CT and TSX SportsWagon may have been easy experiments to weight out interest on such models. After all Honda already had the TSX ready, and it's been selling well over 10% of the total TSX sales with a single engine option. Well, either way that's great news for many wagon-savy TOVers, hope you guys are happy with it.
I have to wonder though, if that means there will be an Accord Wagon of this generation coming at some point as well (but developped in Japan together with the sedan).
PS: It seems that little by little Honda will move product development locally, keeping in Japan the higher added value task of developping the core technologies underlying product platforms and manufacturing activities. Starting to think about it as Honda JP providing a "general toolbox" out of which local markets will be able to build the products they want.

Oh so you want to compare a base TSX to a loaded Accord? In that case the TL is only $3K more than then then EX-L nav V6 Accord, why do they make the accord again if it's so close in price to these cars?

Check equipment levels. The "base" TSX has only a couple more things than a "loaded" Accord, overall they're equipped almost the same so its the most fair comparison and the most likely scenario for someone to be shopping both cars. But with the current gen of both cars, that extra 2-3k buys me more power, a FAR higher quality interior, more sound insulation, etc. so its a bargain, and that's why they make both cars. But the point is if you look at numbers and features the step up to Acura isn't that much money, certainly nowhere near 10k when your comparing "similar" models between the two.

If Acura is indeed losing $2,500 on every TSX they sell in the U.S., I imagine profit conscious Honda is looking for alternative sedans and wagons, preferably that can be built in North America.
The ILX is a step in that direction, but in a comparison shop buyers usually will opt for the slightly more expensive, more substantial TSX.

As Daniel stated, since the US is the biggest market for "American" Civic, it might as well be developed here. The engineers and product planners in America know the competition better than those in Japan.
I see the wagon as a replacement for the Crosstour. Its the Honda way, step out on a ledge with new a product, get burned and knock it out of the park on the succeeding generation.

This makes me EXTREMELY EXCITED. This pretty much redeems the luke warm reveal yesterday. Finally! A return to the sofistication and funtionality of the wagon. I see this as more proof that the TSX will be kicking the bucket soon.
I'm surprised more people aren't as enthusiastic about this decision. This is Honda listening to us!

So again, isn't that what Acura is suppose to be? Nicer? Better quality materials, exc? Could the Accord be designed better if it started out $10K higher....yes. Is a TSX the same size as an Accord....no. Is Lexus nicer than Toyota? Is it really news that the luxury version of a car company has nicer cars than the everyday brand?

Wonder if it could be "both". In a way long before European markets jumped into the SUV wagon they used to have "rised-up wagons" as a cheap alternative (Audi, VW and Volvo come to my mind, but there were others). It could be that the CT was too much of an effort for an "in-no-man's land-car", and that Honda is considering the possibility of replacing it with a real wagon with much higher shared content. Then why not add a risen up version with bit more rugged elements.
Obviously, they could as well drop the CT altogether. Wonder how is it going in China after the initial numbers...

Making an accord wagon on the new sedan base sounds like an export model.
If they want to sell versions of the new accord, especially the plugin in Europe then the wagon is a must.
Things like plugin hybrid taxis would be a game changer - imagine the taxi line up at airports, exhibitions etc. recharging while waiting.

I think you will see a replacement, still called the Crosstour, maybe, but there is a CLEAR message in the 2013 Crosstour that you will see........Remember, it is based on the 2008 Accord, so the new one in 2 years will be based off of..................yes, the 2013, but because of how fast Honda can make changes now, I think you will see more of a wagon then a hatch as it is now.....The word is heard at Honda, CT is not a popular car, it's nice, but Honda customers want more......

For as unpopular as the Crosstour seems to be, I've seen a lot of them around. So that sort of confirms that this new wagon is actually the new Crosstour.

Remember Honda's first minivan effort, the Passport? A slow seller. It lead to the Ody and the rest is history.
So I expect Honda to hit it out of the park the next time with this wagon.
