YES!
Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, supports USB audio, which means that you can hook up external DACs (and likely ADCs) too over the USB.
Just like a PC... and sort of like the iPhone/iPad.
SO! What does this portend to Honda's support of the USB connection for Android? Will Honda release an upgrade to their in car system so that it can finally be updated on the fly and support the new Android interfaces?
Mind you.. this is MOMENTOUS OCCASION because now it means that we will have the option finally using a non Apple phone for just about everything. Up until now, Apple had this sawn up and tied to their high profit margins ( You want more memory? Yes.. we will sell you a whole NEW phone for that. You want 24/96 playback? Sorry, we won't do that. )
Personally, my brand new Samsung SIII will get upgraded very soon, so I figure that in short time I will no longer carry my iPod around anymore. And, hopefully, I'll be able to plug my Samsung (with its removable memory) to something like a NuForce or a King0Rex or a Ray Samuel's and use my in ear phone to groove.
Play 24/96 and 24/192 while I walk down the street. Unfettered from a laptop.
Play High Bit Rate audio while driving in my car without having to burn DVD-As.
Doing The Number Two at work will take an entirely new dimension in acoustic reality.
Heck, I may even have to buy another NuForce HDP to keep at work.
WOOOOHOOO...
Take that, Apple. :-P
Hmm... I think I'm going to need a portable USB hub too so that I can hook up a USB memory stick and the DAC and the car audio....

My son updated his Samsung Nexus to Jelly Bean, and loves it. Claims it's a huge improvement over Ice Cream Sammich.

Has he plugged it into a USB audio device yet?
I plan to try my NuForce HDP and see if it works.
I also have a couple of M-Audio Transits around, but those need a driver in the host side and I don't know if M-Audio will ever make a driver for them since they are now old products.

It was only a matter of time...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/30/gear4-speaker-dock-supports-usb-audio-for-jelly-bean-at-google-i/
..before someone released "an app [...] that can be used to set alarms, sync time, tune the radio and play media over the USB port on legacy versions of Android"
I think this is going to finally open the floodgates.
No wonder Apple is suing everybody, they can see that the Open Source Way is going to crater their profit margins.
The way Google is moving, the only thing that separates Apple from the others is the GUI.. and Apple is trying to patent ideas that are inherently unpatentable.
At this point in time, Android is moving with real speed and is already superior to Apple's iOS.

My Nexus S has upgraded and it is killing battery life - I mean its like 6 hours standby. Ice Cream was OK. this is ridculous. anybody know a solution? I will give USB audio a whirl....

(1) Battery power.. look into the menus, there's likely a power mode control.. choose the one that looks like it will use the least power.
(2) What kind of USB audio device did you hook into? Some of the older ones require drivers, newer ones don't. Example, M-Audio Transit needs driver, NuForce HDP doesn't .
(3) Buy an external battery. We got two, one of them is solar and holds like 2300 mAh, the other holds over 12000 mAh's!!! Both charge over USB (OK, the solar offers yet another way) and offer simultaneous downstream USB charging to the phone, meaning you can plug the phone to the battery while the battery is itself plugged into the USB/wall adaptor to charge both in series (or basking in full sunshine). Later you take both with you and plug the phone into the battery for a refresh as needed.

turns out I just needed to disable a load of unnecessary crap - I had noticed it was running hot most the time too - so having now turned off a load of tuff Jelly bean had turned on if anything it is better than before. thanks.
