(Maybe there's something to Honda's "ACE Body Structure" after all.)
GRAPEVINE, Texas - A North Texas man walked away without a scratch after an 18-wheeler was blown over on top of his Honda CRV during Friday's storms.
The trailer had a 12,000 pound load when it was knocked over on the SUV.
Keith Isom said when he slid into the passenger seat and crawled out of the window.
Isom said traffic wasn't moving at the time because of the blinding rain. He saw the trailer rocking in the wind a few feet away. He said he actually drove up next to the trailer to take shelter from debris flying from nearby road construction.

The numbers on roof strength are great but the picture should be posted next to every CRV in the showrooms.

This TV station later did an interview with the driver of this vehicle. He said his CR-V was brand-new, and he was trying use the truck to shield it from the rocks and grit that the storm was blowing from a roadside construction site. Talk about Murphy's Law...

Is $500 a industry standard for totaled vehicles?
I wonder if the airbags went off? Roll-over sensor probably didn't trigger since it was a downward force. Might be able to salvage the front airbags, less likely the seat mounted airbags. I would assume most everything else is damaged. Tires look blown out, thus wheels may be ruined. All body panels likely suffered some strain and crimped.
This driver should personally thank the IIHS for adding roof strength testing to its list. Without their pressure on manufacturers this guy would likely be dead.

Back in the late 70's when the Accord hatchback came out and before IIHS added any roof strength standards I was involved in an accident.
Me and three passengers, one of them with crutches, drove off the road, flipped upside down, landed in the ditch upside down among trees and brushes that had been recently cut. The car continued to glide on the roof till it came to a stop just as I saw a cut log coming towards me and penetrated the window in front of me. ( Car came to a complete stop as window broke).
As we came to ourselves we realized none of us was hurt and when we got our senses back to figure out the upside down world I rolled the window open so we could crawl out and as we did that we heard voices from the roadside: "Look, they are coming out, they are alive...must be a Volvo."
So I shouted back, "No. it is a Honda."
The car was totaled, beat up from the impact, hitting trees, stumps and cut down logs. Looked terrible from the outside but all four of us crawled out without a scratch. (Used seat belts).
The car was taken back to the importer and used as a showcase to show dealers and others the safety built into a Honda vehicle. If I do not remember wrong I think the roof had 3 wide crossbars that prevented the roof from collapsing.

I remembered seeing the news many years ago back a 2nd gen Accord hatch was crushed by a truck like the CRV above. The driver did survive, but with serious injuries and after trapped for a long time inside. Even with the reinforcement as I am sure that they have, the Accord was a pancake. My own 2nd gen Accord was badly crumpled from behind after hit by a drunk driver although it has nothing to do with roof..
Seeing the news above I'm feeling very reassured that if anything were to happen to me or my family while in the car, my new Honda will increase the chance that I will survive. I need this reassurance because of all the things happening lately, I am very paranoid about accidents this past few years.. irresponsible truck, SUV drivers or drunk drivers causing accidents is increaseing lately in my town.

Sure is a big difference holding the vehicles own weight and the weight of a semi.
Truckers have a tough schedule, they sell drugs at the truck-stop to help the driver stay awake longer. Also to keep up with the pressure from brokers etc. and to keep your job many truckers keep 2-3 or more log books to bypass the law when to rest etc. If the law mandates you take a rest before driving more they just write another logbook to keep on driving. Drivers fatigue many times cause accidents. With more and more traffic on the road, more stress etc. accidents are more likely to happen. Truck drivers feel safe from other traffic due to their large size and maybe big SUV owners have the same "superior" feel and cause them to drive more irresponsible?? To avoid drunk drivers (even commercial jet pilots dare showing up drunk these days) they should have a device in a car that detects "alcohol breath" and cause the vehicle not to start.

The current CRV and many Honda cars responded great to the new IIHS testing (Mazda too). When the roof test first came out, Honda/Acura actually had some pretty poor showings. But they were also willing to redesign mid year and get retested to gain better results. Having said that, Volvo/Mercedes lived up to their reputations, almost every category you'll see their cars at the top. Safety's just baked into those two makes.

One thing I like about Honda is the great safety score without much compromise on vehicle weight and efficiency.

Wasn't that long ago that someone fell off a 14th floor window and landed on the roof of CRV.
She survived the fall.

I do, have personally experienced "miracles", angel intervention?? We know who is in charge of the angels.
