is it good idea to pump up car tires slightly above the limit stated for the car? I want to save fuel.

Let me guess. You're asking this because you're losing air, tire pressures go down very slowly, say over 3-4 months? I'm assuming you still have the original rims, not tires but rims. Have you ever replaced valve stems that's a piece where you pump air in, before?

I usually put 1-2 psi higher. Just be sure you're looking at the sticker on your car's (driver side)door jam which tells you what pressure(F/R) you ahould have.
NOT on the sidewall on a tire.

I pumped mine 2-4 psi over. IMO it will save a bit gas as I feel the acceleration is lighter. But mostly, I like the handling better than the factory spec. If you inflate them too much, you will have uneven wear and the ride may be too harsh too.

The thing about pumping air into your tyres. Usually you would have driven a bit to get to the petrol (gas) station before you can pump the air. Remember this causes the tyres to heat up and the air pressure to rise. On the door sill, the recommended air-pressure is for the tyres when cold and on level ground. So you cannot use those pressures at the station. What I usually do is I measure the tyre pressure when cold and then when at the station. I note the pressure difference (increase). Then the pressure I pump the tyre at is the recommended cold pressure plus the increase. For my case, I usually end up around 2-3 psi higher than the recommended values. Sometimes I top up an additional 1 psi in order to get slightly better mileage without much sacrifice in uneven tyre wear.

Mostly the same as other posts.

I pump 10% higher (around 3 psi) to get better gas mileage.
The reduction in tire rolling resistance as a function of tire pressure gets to a point of diminishing return, so going 20% higher in pressure isn't going to help as much as the first 10%.

Pump when tires are cold. I have an electric pump which connects to the 12V outlet in the car and I pump in the morning before the car is used.

What really works are the driving habits. It can save you a lot! Im saving over $100 by driving more efficiently. another one is to consider buying aftermarket parts like the fuel pump assembly I purchased. Over inflated tires wear out more quickly and needs to be replaced more often

Doesn't save money. You will then need to shove more pizza in the pie hole.
