VW is still addressing the issue by adding a number of higher-rent materials and new standard features to the Jetta for the 2013 model year.

Mid-level SE models gain new metallic dashboard and door trim, power-reclining front seats and leather adorning the steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. The GLI‘s soft-touch dashboard migrates to all SEL-trim models (it was previously available only on the SEL Premium), while a two-tone black and beige interior color scheme and a six-way power driver’s seat are also now standard SEL equipment.
VW will be dropping the 2.5-liter five-cylinder in favor of a 1.8-liter turbocharged, direct injected four, as was rumored. This is the same 1.8 TSI engine with 158 horsepower and 185 pound feet of torque found in the European Passat and CC.

Honda, are you listening?

I'm not worried about Honda listening but apparently VW is listening as it seems they are responding to the biggest criticism leveled against the Jetta with this MMC - downgraded interior materials.

The other big complaints against the Jetta was the base model rear drum brakes, archaic 2.0l base engine and the loss of its rear independent suspension.

Funny, they didn't seem to fix any of those problems. By the way, the 2.5l Jetta finished last in a 2011 C&D comparo just after its release.

Yet the Insideline long term Jetta had an intererior that looked like new when they were done with the term. Sometimes the interior may not look glossy but will last longer. The same could not be said of their Hyundai long term car.

I read something similar in a car mag (car and driver or motor trend) long term update of a VW Jetta TDI, that they were worried about it, but after a year and 20,000 miles it still looked new, and that their long term Equus showed signs of wear. Something to be said for that!

So the engine goes from obsolete to mildly unimpressive.

158 horsepower is pretty awful for an engine that has both direct injection and the added complexity of a turbocharger. Sure, the torque is nice off the line, but this really looks like it will run out of steam quickly. By comparison, the current 2.5L engine makes 170 HP and 177 lb-ft of torque (granted this is probably higher in the RPM range).

If Honda put an engine like this into the Civic, I'd say things would go from boring to utterly hopeless.

What Honda needs for its compact cars IMO is something that can compete with the Mazda SkyActiv-G 2.0L.

This engine makes 155 HP and 148 lb-ft of torque. It has fairly linear power delivery and is by most accounts very well suited to the Mazda3.

Agreed. Also the next Mazda3 will have the full suite of SkyActiv technology so the header, chassis and other stuff will be improved as well. The whole thing will be lighter and be fun to drive.
