Actually the automatic transmission isn't such a bad thing in this case. If it helps to make the car popular (talking about the sports car genre in particular), perhaps that will help the segment gain popularity. More auto makers will follow suit **CoughHondaCough** and maybe juuuust maybe the enthusiasts out there will have more to chose from. Hell, if the MT was relegated to a "special edition", I'd gladly pay a premium to get one...nicely equipped, thank you.
;)
If automatic 289s helped justify 302s, 351s, 428s and 429s who are we to complain?
The interesting point being they were available for sale over the internet, a first for the Australian market I believe?
Saw my first one on the road this weekend. Couldn't tell you if it was a FRS or a BRZ :) OK looking car, bit frumpier than I expected - is this a car that looks better in photos than in the flesh?
All strength to "Toyaru" for building it, especially at the price point they have chosen.
I had the total opposite reaction when I saw it in person. I may have stated before, but I had zero intention to buy this car until I saw it up close, and I went in and placed an order - undriven.
Looks are subjective of course, so no opinion is invalid there, and sure the car won't be for everyone.
From all I have read, the auto version is respectable performance wise, but I need to get back to rowing my own gears. Every minute I spend in my hybrid is painful, because I know what experience I am now missing, and my freshly ordered Asphalt FR-S MANUAL has no ETA.
"I went in and placed an order - undriven" Really ? That's a bit ... brave ! Odds on it'll be a great car, but I would definitely have had a drive before ordering.

I did that in July of 2005, on the 2006 Si that I am driving today!

Same. I signed, sealed and delivered my 2006 Si and didn't drive it until I took it off the lot.
It isn't brave. I had seen enough reviews to know what to expect, and once I drove the FR-S, it was better than I expected.

Same here. It was no secret or mystery what the 8th gen Si offered. There was so much buz about it, so many positive reviews and even video footage from TOV. I knew exactly what to expect and it absolutely blew away those expectations.
The opening 23 seconds of this video is what got me hooked. The moment I saw that, I knew what my next car would be.:-)

Great, isn't it? A sort of blend of Prelude & S2000, with a tiny bit of DC5 thrown in. They've judged the user-friendly versus exciting driving almost perfectly. Unlike the S2000, it doesn't demand an expert driver.
AND you can resonably see out of it - a feature that condemns about 90% of new cars to the scrap heap AFAIAC.
Actually, the slushbox really isn't that bad, so long as you keep one foot on each pedal and drive it manually in sport mode. I can see the reason for it and since most people haven't the skill to use a bloody manual properly, it'll probably be a more realistic choice for many.
Actually, that colour isn't too very far from my Supermarine Blue 'Lude either. It's subtle, not drab! Well, it is under our grey skies. I still think yellow & chrome only works properly under Californian ones.
Upshot; the 86 is a fantastic coupe & does live up to the hype.
You can stop sobbing, Toyoda-san. It's Ito-san's turn...
It still amazes me that the posts above indicate that cars are being bought without seeing first-hand how they actually feel. Anyway, you all seem happy with what you ended up with, so I guess it worked out.

Count me in to the 'bought before a test drive' bunch. I couldn't even drive manual at the time :)
Search for some posts from the 2006 Si Concept reveal, and you will see an entirely different place than today. People were actually excited and anxious to get hands on the 8th Gen, and the ToV staffers were all full swing involved with this car.

I dumped an '05 TL Nav for the '06 Si coupe -definitely no regrets here either.
I had ordered my 2nd S2k and called the dealer to follow up on the ETA... My salesman mentioned that their first "new" Si had showed up so I stopped by to take a look. Drove the car once around the back lot and parked it... Went home, couldn't barely sleep so I brought it home the next day. Didn't take the car on public roads until I was leaving...

Here's my Si in the showroom, before delivery 12-21-05.
