The ZDX should be kept, it is for a very very specific type of buyer, like a bachelor making decent cash and isn't into sports cars... But man does it stand out on the road! And that's exactly why it should be kept.. every time one passes by everyone's head turns to see what craft from Mars just drove by promoting the Acura brand.
However... I agree, a TL sport wagon would be killer.

With only 63 ZDX's sold in June, probably at deep discounts,
it would seem that this specific type of buyer is very rare indeed!
And I guess I am just as likely to see this craft from Mars, since I have never seen a ZDX on the road.
Happy 4th of July!

What Honda/Acura apparently forgets when they enter a niche space that is already occupied, is that you have to meet or best what is already there. If they feel that the ZDX is worthy of the MMC investment, it better be one hell of an MMC...one that addresses damn near every negative the car has.
I can't wait to see it. There is only one way up from the bottom, right?

BMW globally sells about 40K of them... almost half of the total X5 sales.
Acura surely lost all hope to get a similar ratio.

I've seen exactly 1 in downtown Houston, parked by the Pavilions. Silver. I was surprised to see it, hearing about how poor the sales were. Then as I walked around to the back I noticed it was stickered as the Acura Dealers Loaner Car.

Speaking of stealth, I love how the buttons in the ZDX completely "disappear" when the car is turned off. Acura should throw this into all of their cars! It would be a big selling feature.

I understand that the ZDX is practically a pointless vehicle but the ZDX was never about practicality anyway. It's purpose is primarily to make a statement, to attract attention. It is a striking vehicle and it undeniably turns head everywhere it goes. So I think it is serving its purpose really well.
I don't think the development cost of the vehicle was high because the innards are basically from the MDX platform. I could be wrong though.
"What does the ZDX do for the Acura brand?"
I think it does help improve the brand image/perception. It makes people want to buy one - well if you're in the drooling-I-want-one group haha. And right now, it is the only model in Acura's lineup that I can consider as a true luxury vehicle. Just my opinion.
I actually would like Acura to keep the ZDX as long as they don't stray from the formula: form over function, style over practicality - because that is luxury.
|
The form is lousy, and the style is ugly. But let's face it - Acura is a truck company, as MDX and now RDX prove the case, so Acura feels there's no way to give up on their sexy truck.
Acura could have built a nice looking coupe based on TSX or TL, but I guess they feel they really have to think outside the box.

I doubt it makes business sense to keep the ZDX and it's certainly not the kind of vehicle I would ever be interested in but I do have to agree on one point. They really stand out, and look great on the road.
I've seen quite a few in the south florida area and every one is a real head turner. The first one I ever saw was coming down the turnpike at sunset, just dark enough that the lights were on but still bright enough to see. Black exterior, really nice LED tails, Man did that thing look nice (for a stupid SUV). It really grabs your attention and exudes quality.
That's the extent of credit I'll give the vehicle though.

One problem: the ZDX does not have LED taillights.
Anyway I greatly agree with you. I once saw a white ZDX parked at the fuel station, and it looked BIG. Definitely stood out among all the cars there. An old couple was driving it...which didn't surprise me.

Haha ya, I've seen 2 in total since it's launch, one at an autoshow in FL and another in the local streets of NY lol.
I believe tho, that just by the sheer amount of heads they turn they can probably be looked at as a very effective rolling advertisement. Considering that they're on the road almost every day for 5 or so years... probably cheaper vs trying accomplish the same feat with TV ad's that most people just ignore.

R&D costs of the ZDX were extremely low as it's essentially a rebodied MDX. Its pretty much been a low volume design exercise for Acura. I do however think that Acura should have produced another CL using a slightly shorter TL platform as a base. A 6MT SH-AWD Acura coupe would have been much more popular and cheaper to purchase.

Unless the development costs were $0, they spent too much.
Whatever money was wasted on the ZDX could have been better used for the 9G's interior or a 6 speed automatic in certain models.

They stated they wanted to sell 6k, then 8k then 10k! They expected sales to go up which clearly didn't come close to materializing.
The X6 actually is a huge hit for BMW and has done extremely well for the brand even if it got a lot of negative reaction and commentary. Seems a X4 is coming next.

1SICKLEX,
Acura never stated that they were expecting sales to increase to 8k and 10K. They only stated that they expected sales to increase beyond the initial goal, with no specific numbers given. Stop spreading false information, it doesn't do much for your almost non-existent credibility. Always has to be monkey business with you...

Agreed, the money could have been put to better use BUT the development of a new 6AT for the Civic would have been much greater vs the cost of the "development" of the ZDX. Again, the ZDX is simply a sleeker, rebodied MDX so Acura had to invest very little to make the ZDX a reality.

Yeah.... I think the styling is pretty cool, just on the wrong platform, wrong mission (what IS its mission?).
The RDX and MDX can hold their own ground in the practical SUV segment. If Acura wants to do a fashion statement, they should target people who care about fashion statements; young, impressionable people.
Let's call this ZDX compact........ the ZSX.

The idea of the ZDX is great but the execution needs some polishing. The beak issue has been beaten to death and the rear egress/ingress needs some work. These things won't be addressed for the MMC but I surely hope they keep the ZDX around for a second generation and it gets transformed into a thoroughbred in Acura's stable. The western world along with the Chinese and Russian markets clearly show strong interest in this segment and have proven so by X6 sales. With the introduction of the Mercedes MLK/MLC(whatever they decide to call it) and Audi's Q6 this segment will thrive even more.

Awesome. We all know how much businessweek knows about cars. Like I said, ACURA never stated a specific progressive sales increase.
Obsession? I would refer to your alarming inability to stay away from any forum/discussion that is Honda/Acura. You've already been universally banned from every forum using your original name (1SICKLEX), and even you know what sort of "rep" comes with that name, which is why you now use "alternative" names in order to mask your true identity. But even with different names, you've still been busted several times because people always know when it's you. It would be one thing if I was the only person on here that says you are 1SICKLEX, but there are SEVERAL people that are saying it. You even had your moderating skills stripped from you at ClubLexus because you are such an extremist. I seriously still can't believe that you asked to get paid to be a moderator.
At least have the dignity to man up to it.
We can have legitimate debates here on TOV, and not like the ones on ClubLexus where you would just lock a thread when you would get owned. You know a fair amount of info and it would be more welcomed here if you weren't always such an angry douche and a bit more realistic (and honest) about your personal opinions regarding anything not Toyota/Lexus, and less of an extremist.

I think the ZDX will do better if it gets a TL-like MMC. The subtle finessing and refining did the TL wonders. I almost never see a pre-MMC TL.
Also it just costs too much. People will pay 40,000 for a truck in a heartbeat (GMC,Chevy). But something like the ZDX, even though its based on a truck platform; is too far removed and niche to sell at its current price with Acura's brand cache.
Make it a little more truck-like with MDX cues and price right at $43 along with the MDX.
