I got this from our local paper;

"Jesse Toprak, analyst for consumer research site TrueCar.com, said several factors helped automakers last month. Lower gas prices and easier credit terms helped companies sell more large vehicles, and both Ford and GM had unusually high sales of vehicles to rental-car fleets.

"The fleet numbers were higher than we'd expected," Toprak said.

Rental fleet sales generate little if any profit for automakers, and leaning too heavily on that market can hurt resale values in the long term. But both GM and Ford said fleet sales will be down sharply this month. GM blamed the high fleet numbers on an odd delivery schedule that had many customers picking up cars in June that typically would have been delivered in July. "

On my weekend trip to BC and back I could not help but notice how many of the new cars (as opposed to trucks) were rentals - Fords, Toyotas, Chrysler....If your only vehcile is a big truck and you don't need it for a long journey it can be cheaper overall to rent a car at weekend rates as it will use half the gas...
