Showing 830 kms right now and I need to put some gas in it. The thing is - this is 100% in town and everyday involves elevation changes of nearly 500 feet. I havent done a long enough out of town journey yet in it to see what it will do - the low sixth may be a hindrance on the highway to best mileage but it probably helps in town where it is very usable. Most days I'll get it past 5000 revs at least once in the lower gears, but when you're trundling along with traffic the low sixth helps. Trip meter shows 7.9 ltrs per 100 Ks which is 30mpg in American. I am sure summer gas and mild temps help a lot.

that's freaking amazing for in town driving. We're getting around 23-24mpg in town in our sport wagon. Last week I took a trip up to Chattanooga and averaged 36.2mpg. That was traveling at an average of around 75mph, with a few bursts up over 80 from time to time and a few slowdowns. On the way back the FE wasn't quite as good (32 and change) because we got hung up in a long traffic jam due to a flipped SUV (btw, I can't remember the last time I saw an SUV involved in a freeway accident where it DIDN'T flip)

Was you car loaded? Using AC?

Our TSX is at around 800 miles now so it's very green.

Around town, and the weekly Costco run... remember my 3.3 mile commute? I get about 20 mpg. When my wife puts it on the 405 she gets over 28 mpg.

We're planning a road trip to Seattle in August... so I'm really expectant about it. The car should have around 1000 miles on it when we go, so this will be its real break in.

Right now I'm amazed at its claimed range. When I fill it up, the trip computer announces gas tank ranges of well over 450 miles. I expect that once we get on the I5, we should be able to really make good time. We will going back on the TSX and Fit, boths car with long tank ranges.... having that means the limit is the bladder, not the tank. On this, I won't miss the CRX with its 340 mile range.

Of course, that 1200 mile one way trip goes over quite a bit of mountain passes and the California run is usually 80mph all the way, so I don't expect to do better than 30mpg over all. Specially as it gets really hot in August so the AC will be going at full blast.

On the 36.2mpg stint it was just me in the car with some stuff in the cargo area, so it wasn't loaded down. AC was on "AUTO" the entire way. On the way back there were 3 of us in the car, and a few suitcases.

Long range is awesome, isn't it? Even on cars with relatively poor mpg, a big tank really gives you a sense of freedom. Our Tahoe has a theoretical range of about 500 miles at 75 mph thanks to a monster tank (thank goodness it only needs 87 octane). The Infiniti has showed range nearing 600 miles. It's nice being able to go from LA to Phoenix non-stop and still arrive with enough gas to toodle around town for a few days and then fill up just before you leave.

Personally, I think I've come to value range about as much as absolute fuel economy. Of course, as I get older, I find myself less capable of going 5-6 hours without stopping...;)

In theory, if I could have held that 36.2mpg average the range would have been nearly 670 miles for the TSX. I could make it to Miami on a tank.

..Tony(E), I have the same Gen7 6-6 that you left behind (probably with misgivings).......

I-5N to Bremerton/Seattle many times; mostly north of 35 MPG too!

The TSX is a great car but..........................

We await your Seattle trip fuel numbers......

have done 100kms on next tank and says I have range of 850 kms left..., and 7.8 ltrs per 100 kms. Itching to do a long highway journey in it. maintenance minder is still on 80% after nearly 4000 kms.

Bremerton... I _really_ know that place... ;-)

But Hwy 16 is slow... those folks going to Port Orchard are really slow.. at least the people going to Silverdale do the speed limit.

BTW- I want a "Fred Meyer Bremerton" T-shirt.... they don't make it though, I asked, they thought I was nuts.

I have several PSNS and Navy t-shirts and hats.

I find long range very very useful on long drives. As you say, it gives you a sense of freedom. And so long as the fuel economy is reasonable, range is more important. (however, note that to drive even a Fit from Irvine to Tacoma is going to cost 124 for gas, plus food, plus wear and tear and more if you spend the night in a hotel... so at that cost even seat 31C on Alaska Airlines starts to look better).

And safety too during winter drives on the mountains because you never know when you will run into storms. The Internet and my G3 (soon a G4 when my Verizon Samsung ships) phone help a lot too to plan when to stop for gas..

...but long range is the most useful factor when planning a drive. Sometimes you have to haul to avoid rush hour drives ( our I5 drive goes through LA, Sacramento, Portland, Olympia-Tacoma-Seattle.... so rush hour avoidance is important.

...and oftentimes you want to stop only when you eat... so you don't want to stop in the middle of nowhere to gas up when you know that you really want to eat 100 miles down the road.

Body range wise, I think I've solved it.

We normally go try to go five hours between stops. This means, NO WATER during the first 3 1/2 hours. Then during the last 1 1/2 hour we drink up lots of fluids. At the stop, we flush it out and off we go. This way we stay hydrated -very important- but we don't have to worry about stopping for Number 1 all the time.

This also means no coffee. If anything, I'll stock up on Diet Monsters and go on.

...

Our Seattle-Puget Sound (Bremerton some times... yes) drives are just about 1200 miles. In good weather this is about 17 hours with four brief breaks.

In the California side, the normal breaks are at the 300 mile range (LA->Los Baņos) and 370 mile (Los Baņos->Weed). This gives us the option of stopping at Andersen's Pea Soup and gives up the chance to top off so we can avoid stopping in Oregon.

After than, with long range we can make it clear across Oregon without stopping. We get excellent range there because of the low speed limits (I seldom go over 74 on cruise control nowadays). Weed to Centralia is about 375 miles. And you can get espresso in The Puget Sound.

Or, we might want to drive straight to Medford, so with the long range tank we go right up there and go right by Weed. But from Medford to Seattle we need another stop... and going to Medford from Los Baņos is a bladder busting extension. Which we avoid in the winter because I want an almost full tank over the Shiskayou Pass. But Medford to Seattle is doable, again with a bladder busting drive (my son and tried in the Fit but we had to find a convenient spot off the I5 in the dark...).

From Weed we might stop in Roseburg at Casey's... so if we do that we can top off the gas tank there and go non stop to the Puget Sound (350 miles).

So, yes, long range is fantastic. You can go from Irvine to Seattle with theoretically two stops, but as you say, you get there dehydrated and with an enlarge bladder. :-P
