Well that is good to hear, but I still have to wait before I can have a look for myself

I have to put something about the upcoming Civic up at 'Honda Fan' but have been struggling with how to word it. Didn't want to hurt the feelings of Honda Malaysia who seems so 'gung-ho' about it with its 'best seller in the US' status. In the end, I think the fairest recommendation would be what you wrote - i.e. keep an open mind, hope/expect the ASEAN versions to have better interior quality and wait for the car to come and take a look before making any conclusions/decisions. Only one big problem is that I -have- to advice anyone who wants a 'twin-cam VTEC' Civic to get the current 2.0l one before it gets replaced. Because we will go back to the days before the 7Gen MMC where the Civic will all use the SOHC engine (1.8l and 2.0l).

You may have mentioned it before. But you also mentioned somewhere in TOVA, the R20 can beat all the figures the DOHC output, stock. So it is 'good enough' for most people, but of course I understand that 'good enough' seems to be used too often at Honda and a lot of people are not happy about this. I don't really need to point out that actually.
On the bright side, we know the next gen smaller engines are going DOHC? Next gen Fit/City DOHC? Although that will be more for fuel economy but hopefully it does not impact the perception thing too badly.

BTW, it's probably more like match not beat.
On a side note, since I am assuming that the Earth Dreams engines represent the type and not each engine then the 1.5 might grow to 1.8 to be fit into the Civic. Until we then I just wait. Even if this generation is not worth it I might not be shopping for replacement Honda until at least 8 years after so it's not bothering me at least.

Wong, I understand what you are saying about being polite, but sometimes telling the painful truth is the most polite you can be. Long term, Honda will benefit a lot more from people telling it like it is, versus sugar coating the truth so that they don't get offended. At least that way, it will be clear where they need to improve in order to succeed. However, I understand wanting to word it in a way that gets the message across but is still tactful, even though I tend to be more blunt.

I prefer to be more 'subtle' and discrete about it. I don't want to be misunderstood, that I am on some sort of 'vendetta'.
I remember a few years ago, one of the long time journalist who it seems felt he wasn't accorded enough 'respect', decided to 'teach' Honda Malaysia a lesson. What he did was to put up an article where he took the then brand new K20A Civic, the pride and joy in the local line-up as a 'sporty twin-cam Civic', then pitted it against one of its competitors, in this case, a Ford Lynx 2.0l. The thing is it is common knowledge amongst enthusiasts that the Ford is no match for the Civic. Both in terms of paper specs and in terms of real-life experience. Enough people in the enthusiast scene driving both cars have taken on each others that it is common knowledge. But still that journalist proceeded to do a comparo and wrote how the Civic was 'totally humiliated' by the Ford. For e.g., I remember how it was written that from a traffic light, the Ford Lynx easily pulled several car lengths after about a hundred meters. Really ? A 140hp 2.0l with a 4AT in a heavier chassis out-dragging a 155ps 2.0l with a 5AT. Nevermind, it was enough and Honda Malaysia had to give him special treatment for a while after that. I recall with amusement how he was treated like a king over the next few events he attended after he published that article.
I would like to go above this sort of nonsense. If I am to blatantly bring out the complaints of the 9G Civic without any discretion, I might be mistaken to be pulling the same stunt. And this is something I definitely do not wish to be thought of as doing. In any case, it is an insult to my readers if I am to really do such a thing.

I am glad you are above this, just fairly review the car in the pro and cons and provide the data from the test and let the people evalute the car for themselves if it is the Honda they want as you have always done.
I have a feeling though, that while you will not pull this sort of stunt, other reviewers will play expert at everything and we might see it happen again.

Wong go into the test with open eyes and form your own opinions - for you do not know how the Malaysian version has been spec'd in comparison with the US version. From my point of view, the Australian interior is at least as good, materials wise as the last generation, and the ergonomics may be better?

The U.S. may have gotten the bargain basement version of the 9G.
