...was the point where Honda finally admitted to itself that the competition is seriously not going anywhere and that they needed to do something NOW! I've been asking myself that for a few weeks now especially after all the EarthDreams/Accord/RLX buzz thats actually sparked a lot of positive feedback here on TOV.

Then we read that excellent interview with Erik Berkman who seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel for Honda here in the states. It's a good feeling however I for one never imagined Honda would have become so arrogant, stale and stagnant.

Everything goes in cycles. honda had a good 10 years then bad 10 years. 2001-2011! hhahaha minus the 8th gen civic masterpiece.

So now its Hondas good 10 years start with cr-v, rdx, accord...

civic is on its bad 5 yr cycle.

Maybe it has something to do with new designers, new engineers and how they progress in a company. By the 5th-10th year they don't care anymore and moved up the CORP ladder and like the "status quo"

hiring cycles...

How is that? Acura MDX, 7G Accord, 1G TSX, 3G TL, Fit and Ody were some of the best cars in their classes.

Well let's see the new products first to see if they truly realized it. It is also possible maybe they "realized" it but the competition is simply better.

Honda is truly moving to be an American company as the Yen at 79/80 is killing exports. They sell more cars here than in Japan and are building more here with focus here.

Mind you sales are still relatively strong for Honda, its not like sales dropped off a cliff.

your counting acura too. TL was good in 3g form and MDX is a big seller. 7g accord meh...hideous. Fit and ody meh. overpriced garbage imo.

also acura has had horrible last couple years with huge sales flops like the ZDX and the last 10 years the Acura RL has failed year in and year out. Acura CSX was a huge fail. There is so much wrong and bad with Acura that a few flukes don't make it better. The new mdx and the old TL were flukes.

Yes I did, 'caused you said:

Seriously man, there is something wrong with you. Compare 7g accord, Fit and Ody to their alternatives of the same MY and then lets talk. As far CSX goes, I heard it sold in good numbers in Canada.
You're sounding as if Honda's lineup was full of garbage in 2001-2011 minus teh 8G Civic....hahaha. This is wrong at so many levels. hahah!

Based on product development cycles, I would say they probably realized it about the time Ito took over, or there abouts.

Perhaps the warring factions within Honda (beancounters vs the engineers/enthusiasts) finally came to a head, and upper management was finally able to realize that they didn't have enough product emphasis vs financial emphasis.

I think the Civic reception simply served to cement the problem and transfer of power because it was very clear that Honda's DNA had atrophied to the point where the core of their product was affected. They could blame a lot of stuff on a lot of factors, but when your #2 revenue maker tanks in terms of perception and reception (even among hardcore Honda buyers) then you can really no longer deny the existence of a problem.

I don't know that there is light at the end of the tunnel yet, but putting Erik Berkman in a lead position that is essentially #2 in the Honda's world shows a lot of progress, and I can sure say that the CR-V is a great product overall, and the Accord is starting to get my hopes up again. The early redo of the Civic is also a clear indication that they are working to fix their issues, because traditionally Honda would not have done such a thing unless they felt they had to. With any luck the trend will continue, and we will see the return of the old core values that made a Honda a Honda.

At least it appears that Honda wasn't allowed to go to the brink like GM and Ford, which shows that somewhere there is some intelligent management.

The new ED engines better be good. If not class leading they cannot achieve small-displacement-turbo MPG with giving up alot of power.

I expect the new engines to be good because Honda used ALL former top Formula One engineers to take this ED project!

That being the case, I really hope Honda has a high performance variant tucked away in the depths of the R&D labs...
