Something for the in-car tech crowd ...

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2012/06/11/confirmed-iphones-siri-is-coming-along-for-the-ride/
Companies expected to take Siri along for the ride in future models include BMW, Audi, Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, Jaguar, Land Rover and Toyota.

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/siri/
Apple is working with car manufacturers to integrate Siri into select voice control systems. Through the voice command button on your steering wheel, you’ll be able to ask Siri questions without taking your eyes off the road. To minimize distractions even more, your iOS device’s screen won’t light up. With the Eyes Free feature, ask Siri to call people, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, use Maps and get directions, read your notifications, find calendar information, add reminders, and more. It’s just another way Siri helps you get things done, even when you’re behind the wheel.

Siri better have a 6 speed and 400 hp rear wheel drive or I am leaving Honda. Just kidding, I think this will be a great addition to automotive tech and an accident reducing feature.

Wow, this is progress. I am wondering when speech recognition will start to work as well as in the movies.

Has anyone heard more about this pending feature? I assume it came too late to be on the 2013 models, or did they squeeze it in? If not, will it be on the 2014's, and which ones? I've been Googling and not finding much about it with regard to Honda.

The voice interface sucks... it means I have to LOOK at the screen a lot more to enter commands.

No way they will not do the same for Google Now.
I assume it'll communicate through BT so it really shouldn't be that hard to implement both.

Keep in mind that iPhone in EU is something like 10% of the market share...
Android cannot be ignored

The Google Now voice recognition and speed blows Siri away. Though it doesn't have the "conversating" capabilities it's just as good if not better.

I have an iPhone 5 and Siri is ok but I prefer google's near real time voice recognition. Speaking of iPhone 5, it was a real bear to try to get AHA working in the '13 Accord Touring I tested. My guess is that almost nobody in the real world will use it in its present state. Configuration is a real mess and it never fully worked for me.

for me... I could not even get that far...
my 2 little daughters first watch, watch, then start to laugh, after seeing me "teach" the things to learn "my english", google or apple. my wife said she surprise the device didn't ask me to stop the torturing, or ask permission to kill itself.
they laugh at me for 1 week. it was my Enagalish, not fault of phone. for now, i stick with the input wheel (or dial).

Android is just another distribution of Linux with a more controlled architecture for Layer 4 and above.

This is why Android is growing so fast: it has a vast pool of code and developers. Device drivers, stacks and ARM code to stop a train. Apple can not hope to match that, only Microsoft has a similar body of developers.

I would not be surprised if the last TWO men standing in the wireless OS field will be Google (Android) and Microsoft. Specially as Microsoft seems to be finally delivering for ARM.

BTW, I run Ubuntu in my home servers.

I have to sort of agree and disagree. Apple doesn't need a ton of drivers since they control their hardware and they have all the money in the world to hire as many developers as they want.

You may be correct that only google and microsoft will be left in the wireless os field but it will be because of Apples arrogance and stubbornness and not because of any technical inability. The appeal of Android is not being so trapped in the walled garden as you are with iOS.

Apple could, at any time, decide to loosen up the restrictions on iOS a bit and give the user more freedom at any time.. But they probably wont... out or arrogance though, not inability.

BTW, long time FreeBSD user here :-)

iOS likely already has a large enough user base to remain a viable platform. That's why you see things like Siri Eyes Free in cars, AirPlay on most new networked home theater recievers, and AirPrint on most new networked printers. Stuff that isn't replaced very often, and not made by Apple. Market share is important, but so is profit share.

Apple makes around 60% of all mobile phone profits and Samsung around 30%- everybody else fights for table scraps. Google makes more money off of ads on iPhones, than on everything Android (not to mention the flushing of $12 billion and counting into the hole called Motorola). In fact, Microsoft makes more money off of Android than Google because of patent licensing...

IMHO, the winners have already been determined, Apple and Samsung, what's left to find out is the split. Google will probably end up being to be the cost-free OS development arm of Samsung until they decide not to. At that point Samsung will just fork Android, like Amazon did with the Kindle Fire, and will be vertically integrated just like Apple.

Funny that Samsung has taken advantage of both Google on the software side and Apple on the hardware side to get where they are. Good job building up a chaebol guys, like Samsung needed any help...
