I wish it could look more athletic though. Should be a nice 5 series alternative.

Might be a good thing for the US market, but it's not what attracted me to the '05 model. I liked the way that car appeared "smaller" than it's physical size. This just looks BIG.

Final opinion when I see it in the flesh naturally :)

Yup I feel design wise a bit predictable and size is too big. But I am not the type that would buy one, hopefully, that doesn't stop most people from buying it.

I remember the consensus was that the RL was too small for a flag ship, not much bigger than the Accord. And the rear interior space was seriously lacking... My, how times have changed.

I personally like it. There is still a market for a large, luxury car. I don't think Acura will beef up the performance at the level Lexus did with the GS, but this hybrid-SH-AWD with 30 MPG across the board is promising for such a (perceived) large car...

It's good that it's big. The market for luxury sedans requires a large comfortable REAR seating area for adults. The lack of rear seat size is probably the main failure of the RL. People who buy luxury sedans are the type who assume they will be entertaining clients or business associates, and nothing will sway them to buy a car with a cramped rear seat. They'd rather buy a used Lexus LS. Even in the mid-price range there are sedans that meet this critical requirement, such as the Avalon or Chrysler 300.

My guess is that Honda is aiming directly at the Lexus LS buyer with a "Smart Luxury" savings of $15K.

Then that is a terrible mistake. At 50-60k "smart luxury" is out the window. Honda might be trying to be a "tweener" with the RL in size but they haven't fooled anyone in the past with the RL and its not going to start fooling people now.

If anything the FWD RL will fight the FWD Lincoln MKS head on and that is a big car, around 200 inches long.

How do you know that?
You haven't even seen the car or know what the packaging content is to come to the conclusion that it needs to "fool" anyone.

This forum continues to talk about FWD vs RWD... but the reality is, the majority of the buyers continue to not car. Audi is selling just fine thank you very much. While those of us that are more performance oriented car more about a RWD platform, the target audience does not.

FWD is not the issue. Most Lexus LS buyers don't have a clue which wheels run the car, and besides, it does not invite balls out driving. It is the experience inside the cabin that sells the big Lexus. If Acura got the size and cabin luxury right, they will sell enough to justify it's existence.

Honda is not going to grab MB or BMW rear drive devotees with this car, even if it had rear drive and a V8. That's a lost cause, because those buyers believe only the Germans can make a car right.

People in the market for Lincolns don't consider Acura's and vice versa. Lexus is closer to Lincolns and what a Lincoln buyer would be interested in.

The RL has had a market, not a large one but it has its buyers, the second generation did pretty well its first two years despite costing 50K and only coming one way. The main reason sales are so low now is the car has been out way too long and is long due for a replacement and the styling update was not well received. The TL SH-AWD now offers most of what the RL offers except for the extra luxury/attention to detail in the interior for a lower price.

From the Acura press release:

Dimensionally, the RLX Concept is approximately the same length as the current RL, but with a two-inch longer wheelbase and two-inch shorter front overhang. Both the track and vehicle width increase by approximately two inches.

Considering the current RL and the current US Accord share exactly the same wheelbase (the RL being slightly shorter), and the RL's wb only grows 2 inches and continues to be the same length, one can conclude that:

The RL will to continue to overlap the TL in size.

The only way they can differentiate the TL and RL will be to reduce the TL size considerably.
