Now the speedo takes the center stage with the tach off to the side like water temp and fuel?

Good or bad? Step away from enthusists dash layout of just the trend?

Maybe a couple of variations might be in play?

Hopefully the 6MT and 6AT will still have a big tach, however for CVTs I wouldn't mind the tach taking a smaller appearance...

The truth Honda just seems to alternate back and forth on this in the Accord, the 3/4g had the speedo in the center, the 5g had symmetrical speedo/tach, the 6/7g had the speedo center justified, while the 8g had them split again, and now it looks like this is back to the center.

At least there might still be a temperature guage--the Civics (even the Si, I think) and the new Camry have dropped it.

And there you have it... the average Accord driver could care less and probably wouldn't notice if the tach was gone altogether. Therefore Honda can change them around at random and no big deal. 6MT will probably still have it front and center... Good thing

This will most likely be setup like the 7th gen was, with the tach off to the left of the speedo, but siamesed into it like right gauge with fuel and temperature indications.

That would be too bad... after driving a 2011 Camry rental for a week recently, with its toy-like "siamesed" speedo and tach, it was confirmed for me how much I really, really like the symmetrical layout of the gauges in my 2011 Accord.

Interesting experience, that. That was the first time I had driven a Camry of the 2011's generation. It was an SE, the supposed "Accord" of the Camry's lineup. Terrible cheap textures on the dash materials, very dull looking. Climate and radio controls were like they were designed and built by Fisher-Price. Radio display was old-school blocky grey-on-grey LCDs, probably like 50 dpi. Very ugly and cheap looking.

I4 and 6AT were actually pretty nice, but the shifting was so muted that I had to really concentrate to detect it. I like my Accord's 5AT better... smooth enough to ignore when you don't need to follow it, but firm enough to detect when you do want to. Manu-matic shifting was nice during some mountain driving, though grade logic worked really well during similar driving with my 2011 Accord EX-L V6.

Even though it was the "sportier" SE, the ride was very soft. I really missed my Accord's road feel. When I'd take an average curve at a speed that my Accord would handle with ease, I had to back off of the throttle with the Camry because it started to exhibit some serious plow.

Oh, and there was no discernible difference in road noise. I was expecting a very quiet interior, but it wasn't any quieter than my Accord.

Sorry for the OT part of the post... mentioning the gauge cluster on the Camry prompted me to post about the whole experience of driving it.

The Camry's cluster is likely not executed as well, because while I like a seperate tachometer, I can't say we had any complaints in either our 2006 Accord EX-L V6 or our 2004 EX-L V6.

Not with me... When your car starts boiling your eggs it will be to late with dumb light to tell you 'hey, I am overheating...'.
Just put real gauge, Honda.
As for tach, with 95% of sold car being automatics and with CVT, driver really does not care for rpm. But I would still like to have it, and the real one (not digital LED 'simulation'). Anyway, what is the point in current automatics to have tach? Car does all the shifting, right? And you can stand on your head but still cannot take control over even with manumatics (no, you cannot drive in 6th 50km/h) which I with plain stick can...

You can still change the gear at whatever RPM you want just with pedal input with AT, that is what the RPM is for. My previous cars don't have manuamatic shifting and I still watch the RPM and change the gear when I want it. On my new car, while I don't have a 6th gear, on mine I can force mine into top gear (5th) below 40km/h on a light load with the steering shifter.

I agree that you don't have FULLLL control compared to the manual, and I think that everyone should learn driving with a manual, but come on.... we also dont have full control over the fuel injector.. should we use carburators... and now we also dont have full control over the throttle as well.. and we dont have full control over braking for some time.. we now have ABS and the EBD and VAS and whatever

I think for normal people, a light coming on when the engine starts to overheat will get them to notice more than with a gauge swinging up and down. if I am not driving the car and someone else is using it and this warning light comes on and the beeping, they will notice it, stop the car call up the service center, call me up or whatever and this should prevents from more damage. Better than not notice the needle at HOT and keep driving it as if nothing happens until too late, I know many people who do this.

If anyone need the car for race and need to keep watching the temp, how hard is it to install a temp gauge anyway if it is for racing, I don't think the one provided on the dash is that accurate as well.. my old car, when starting up morning it is cold... then suddenly moves to middle.. once when my water pump fail and the coolant leaked out, when parked.. so I thought, okay maybe just quickly drive it to the nearby mechanic.. just 2 km away... eveyrthing seems fine then the needle just suddenly jump to hot... what the hell.. might as well put the lights.

My current Honda does not have the temp gauge.. and currently I only just see just the cold light every morning, I don't miss the temp gauge at all..

I do not know what kind of auto car do you drive but when I test drove Hyundai/Kia auto with 'override' paddles or floor shifter I was NOT able to shift into higher gear if I was below certain speed.
Anyway, all this discussion has no point; some people love gauges and numbers some love car to think for them. Some people pay attention when they cross a street some live in a cloud and get killed and blame goes on driver.
You pick car you like I pick what I like; for example I am NOT buying a car which have truck parking brake (leg parking brake instead of hand) due to my style of driving and stopping at lights. End of story.

Hey, my sister's 5MT value package Civic didn't even have a tachometer. >_<

There's probably a gauge for MPGs and battery output and that sort of thing, which takes precedence in this vehicle. Remember it's smart luxury, not racecar luxury.

I know we're all enthusiasts here, but Honda doesn't, and never did, make just Type-Rs. They make cars for everybody too.
