Back to 10% for the month of May!

9.6% for the year vs. 9.9% last year. However last year at this time market share was beginning its fall - market share in May of 2011 was 8.5%. If Honda can keep performing like this the YTD number should be back to that 10% again and probably just stay there.

Other interesting tidbits that apparently no one but me finds interesting:

GM's market share is down 2% this year vs last year (17.8 v 19.8).
Ford's market share is down 1% this year vs last year (15.6 v 16.6)
Hyundai's market share is down .1% this year vs last year (4.9 v 5.0)
Nissan's market share is down .1% (8.1 v 8.2)
Toyota is up 1.2% (13.3 v 14.5)
Chrysler is up 1.7% (9.8 v 11.2)

Just for some perspective: about 6 million vehicles have been sold so far this year. So .1% of the market is about 6,000 vehicles. So GM losing 2% of market share equates out to about 120,000 vehicles! That's a hell of a lot of metal.

The above facts are interesting to me because everyone seems to think that Honda absolutely has to nail the Accord or they'll be in "trouble" but I haven't read anyone talking about how the Fusion or Malibu or Altima are just as important for their respective parent companies. I do think the Accord is important, obviously it is - but I honestly think the Fusion and the Malibu are WAY more important to GM and Ford than the Accord is to Honda. GM and Ford's market share in cars is down. GM is down 1.1% and Ford is down .6% YTD. Meanwhile Toyota's car market share is up 1.4% YTD. Chrysler is up 1.1% YTD in cars - Honda is down .3% YTD, but in May they were up 1.1% in Total cars and up 1.6% in domestic cars. With the Accord and Civic both poised to only get better I can't imagine their car market share doing anything but rising as the year goes on.

Personally not bothered by the subject, but it could be that the Accord will be a strong indication of Honda's direction.

It's loaded with new tech and should be a good representation of what Ito can do (because whether we like it or not, we're stuck with him for some time).

I'm quite optimistic Honda will do fine. But if the new Accord and its powertrain shows badly placed compromise, it won't fare well for the NSX either.

We know they can't mess up the NSX, or else...
