...I really wish we had this car in the U.S. Looks a million times better than our current Civic. The headlights look particularly good on it. A Civic hatch would be great but, of course, Honda would never bring it over to the U.S...because that would make too much sense.

I drove this car in Japan and while I do like the more premium interior I'm just not a fan of the styling. The front end is pretty good but the rest of it does not exude anything appealing to me.

Compared to the safe and vanilla styling of our Civic, I think a hatch along these lines would help drive sales. The stigma of Americans not liking hatches is changing slowly. We are starting to see more hatches join the ranks other than the usual industry stalwarts VW Golf and Mazda 3. We have the Focus hatch, Hyundai Elantra GT, KIA Forte hatch (new one coming soon), etc.
I would like to see a full lineup with the Civic: sedan, hatch, and coupe as long as Honda doesn't carry over the issues it currently has. If Honda is so obsessed with being "green" and increasing fuel efficiency, maybe they should focus more on R&D and dollars on the Fit and Civic line then trying to force feed things like the Crosstour and the CR-Z on the public.

You just made my day, sir! That's so true: if it makes sense, it doesn't belong in the United States of Nonsense.
On the other hand, Honda really needs a compact 5-door for the U.S. The only gasoline hatch currently available is the Fit. But even with the 2012 refresh, it's already old. I want the new i-MID technology in the Civic, but I don't want to sacrifice practicality. The Euro Civic would be my choice if it was sold here.
And for these pics...is that DUCT TAPE holding the crazy ass wing on the trunk? Hahahaha.

I have no problem with hatches, in fact, I really like many of them. I just don't care much for this particular hatch. "Egglike" is an understatement.

More on the same:
Odds are engineers have worked in a stiffer set of springs and dampers along with a more powerful four-cylinder engine. How powerful? Early estimates put the machine at between 220 and 230 horsepower, though there's no official word on the figure.

I've loved that design since the first time I laid eyes on it. A North American 3 door would be great, and I'd even like to see a 5 door with similar styling. My only concern would be cost. I know nobody wants to hear it, but those cars cost more money to build and therefore must cost more on dealer lots, especially if the upscale interior and features are retained.
If North America is finally ready for premium price/content compact cars, then I say bring it on. With Ford having trouble moving higher end Feista and Focus models, I worry we may not be THERE quite yet.

I'll never understand Europe's love for hatches, anyway they can just take the current US coupe body and design the Type R around that. To this day, I am still disappointed they never bought the DC5-R over-I would have it in my garage right now instead of the Type S.

They are overall smaller than other non-hatch cars, making them perfect for europe's small streets. If you multiply the inches saved times the number of vehicles on the road, it adds to thousands of miles.

Resounding NO
That Civic is inferior to North American version because it uses inferior suspension system. Can you imagine the outcry and indignation it would cause on ToV and other Honda-related forums?
Losing front wishbones after year 2000 Civic was painful enough... devolving further back to torsion beam should be a final nail to the coffin for Honda enthusiasts. Remember what made the Civic in the 90s a runaway success was not just the VTEC but also the double wishbones on four wheels.
anyways... I think the current 9th generation North American civic is ripe for a type R version though. All it needs IMO is just take out sound deading from firewall (to hear the VTEC) and use JDM FD2 Type-R bits like the wheels, wings, sway bars and coilovers. The K24Z7 in this Civic may not be 'real' VTEC enough (has no VTEC for exhaust side) but its still got enough RPMs to rev up to 7600 (just like the H-series engine in Prelude) using REFLASH and it seems that this engine (at least in my impression) is built for turbo and it's practically begging for one.

I totally fell in love with the new 2012 9th-gen Euro Civic 5 door HB the moment I first saw pics of it! Honda desperately needs to bring this car to the U.S now!!! Great styling inside and out. Just a very unique looking car all around. The original Civic was a hatchback and should be sold that way forever. A real shame Honda discontinued it here. Europe and the rest of the world always gets the good stuff.

Agreed. I like the Euro Civic 5dr hatch design, but I DO think they made a big mistake in starting with the substandard Fit/Jazz suspension and then relying upon tuning to improve it to expected capability levels. Same problem as in other Honda/Acura models.
