I purchased a mint pearl white/taupe 2008 Acura TL w/ 18k (I sold my 2003 CL Type S a few days after purchasing the TL) back in March and I like the car a lot more than I thought I would. I was actually looking for a Type S 6MT but I couldnt find one locally with low mileage.
I've recieved so many good comments from friends, neighbors and people on the street about how sharp this car is. To me it's probably the best executed Acura sedan to date (along with the 91-95 Legend) as the design, performance and other attributes just make sense and seem to all work together to make this car desirable.
Likes:
- design
- performance
- feature content
- high comfort levels
- the interior fits me perfectly as the cowl is low and all the instruments are where they should be.
- much much quieter vs say.. my friends 2008 Honda Accord.
- the material selection is great as the leather, faux wood and real aluminum really work together to make the simple dash design standout.
Dislikes:
- 5AT's gear ratios are too wide as the silky J32 falls out of it's powerband. A 7 speed DSG would do this car wonders.
- transmission is slow when in SportShift mode.
- the J32 (at least in my car) is really sensitive to the brand of gas. If i use anything else but Shell 93 it's sluggish and uses more fuel.
- the ELS system is clean but it needs more volume. With all the windows down the system can't overpower the wind noise.
- the stock brakes suck PERIOD!
- the paint finish is good but it's simply to thin. By contrast my best friends 2005 Mercedes C-Class seems like it has extremely thick paint.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this car as it seems to be greater than the sum of it's parts like all older Honda products used to be. If I could find a low mileage Type S 6MT I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat and have 2 TL's.
For the next generation TL I really think Acura should draw from this generation of TL in terms of interior/exterior design while adding all the modern standards, technologies and all around performance expectations this segment demands.

I couldn't agree more. A 3GTL with some modern updates would do wonders for Acura. Of course one could argue that is what the V6 TSX is.

Agreed, it's a great car. There's not much I'd trade my 7th gen Accord V6 6MT for, but a TL-S 6MT would be high on that list.

interesting. My mom's 05 definitely rides better than my 08 accord, but it is considerably louder inside and brakes are tons better. If I recall, during the MMC they made changes to the 5at version of the base TL that resulted in what you're seeing with your 08.

Funny you mention it being sensitive to gas -- my friend had an '05 6MT A-Spec that was hypersensitive to something in the fuel at his local gas station. We threw it on the dyno when it was acting up and it was putting down 187'ish horsepower. My '04 6MT never gave me any troubles in that regard, and his eventually went away with a few tankfuls of gas from another station.

For me it's almost a night and day difference as if I use Shell 93 it's much more responsive especially at lower rpm, it revs cleanly and throttle response is much more accurate especially from a standstill. If I use a different brand such as BP or Marathon 93 the car surges slightly until say 4000rpm, the shift quality is jerky and it uses more fuel.

That tl was truly a nicer accord. Which is a good thing. My 01 accord runs better on SHell gas aswell. Interesting. J30

Interesting post and obviously concur. Interesting because on my way to work today I saw pristine 3G TL Type S in Kinetic Blue Pearl and tan interior and it blew me away. It still looked so good, but saddened me at the same time to see what they did with the TL for 4G.
That TL is/was one of H/A's best designs. Congrats on the car.

Totally agree.
Bought mine last December, as a family/winter car when using the S2k is impossible. 07, AT, 60k miles.
This car is awesome. Lots of features, comfort, good performance, refinement, room, quietness, I love it.
But I found out that fuel consumption is a bit high in city driving only. Also, traction is a bit of an issue. Unless you have very good tires, full acceleration is almost impossible: VSA will kick in and, if disabled, you get too much wheel spin.
But being a FWD car, the 3rd gen TL leaves more headroom, legroom, and truck volume than 4th Gen.

I agree with you on the gas mileage as it's not terrible but it's certainly not great. However, I've found that I get less consumption, more performance and a much higher level of response from Shell 93 V-power. My car is VERY sensitive when it comes to the brand of gas.
I guess the car is sensative to certain additives.
Traction is also an issue sometimes especially accelerating up a slight grade with aggressive throttle inputs. I can easily spin the tires until the VSA kicks in and cuts power even if I'm already in motion.
