Honda Motors is all set to launch the Honda Mini MPV, which promises to accommodate your whole family along with your entire luggage. Suzuki has reason to worry as this company till recently had been dominating this segment with the Suzuki Ertiga. There was absolutely no competition for Suzuki in this inventive segment, but Honda has gone ahead and has succeeded in putting a spanner in the “works” of Suzuki.

It would be noteworthy mention here that Suzuki managed a whopping 32,000 bookings within the first month of the launch of its Ertiga MPV. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is modeled on the lines of the Swift. Incidentally the Suzuki Ertiga is exclusively for Indian markets only.

The Honda Mini MPV which has been designed on a platform akin to the Concept S, displayed at the recently concluded Beijing Auto Show, will first be launched in China first and then make its way to India for a grand launch.Cars like the Honda Mini MPV are ideally suited for countries like China and India due to the huge population factor and hence the manufacturing decision of a global platform.

Honda will also be introducing a 1.6 liter diesel engine for its sedan class of cars which include the Honda Civic and City. The new Honda Mini MPV will have an extra seating row with a much spacious boot space. The car is expected to be launched in India by 2014.

Might be based on Brio. Two months ago In Indonesia, the local Honda boss said that the country will be the base of producing Brio MPV in 2014, at the announcement of new automobile production plant. Strange thing though, it's not mentioned in global Honda website... Might be a huge slip up or something.

India and Indonesia market is almost the same. Suzuki plans in India is copied successfully in Indonesia, so I'm pretty sure the mini MPV is the Brio MPV. Ertiga is not that big, about the same size with Fit/Jazz, a hair taller, a bit longer, more wheelbase but same width. I'm expecting Honda mini MPV will be about the same size.

No Tony, you don't want this car. If anything, this car will be as big a Fit shuttle with extended wheelbase, so imagine the Fit, just stretched back a bit with 7 people onboard.

Here's Ertiga dimension:

Overall Length mm 4.265
Overall Width mm 1.695
Overall Height mm 1.685
Wheelbase mm 2.740

It's just okay for average Asian build (1.7-1.8 Meter). Everything makes way for simplicity, including the "cargo mode" for third row seat (the backrest just folds forward).

You should come to India or to South East Asia, and sample these cars you desired so much for US consumption. Even for us they're a tradeoff. For me, my Freed is just enough, yet it's a premium car, one that I'm willing to trade for a smaller model which the alleged Brio MPV will provide.

While I agree about Tony sampling the vehicle first, what I would disagree with is the part about 'average asian size'. The thing is over the past decades, asians have been continuing to 'grow' - fat, obese, large in size, clumsy, etc. Whereas a number of 'westerners' I have met recently, they are all slim, fit, and about the same height with us asians nowadays. The stories of 'huge' 'kwai-lohs' (westerners in chinese slang) that towers over all asians with a body mass of a small car is fast becoming just a folklore.

The thing is many asians have become complacent, even arrogant about our supposedly better health and greater fitness. When one becomes so confident about our health and body, it is very easy to become arrogant. The arrogant will always fall back on hearsay "I am fit, not like the kwai-lohs".

Many asians have adopted the (no offense here) unhealthy food from the western world. Meanwhile, the 'westerners', many of them have become very health concious and looks at their food/diet carefully and eats in moderation, etc. At least many who I have met. Meanwhile, Mc-Donalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wendy's, all sorts of super-rich fast food are now the rage here in Asia. Not to mention the obsession with rich, gourmet, or 'high end' food. I just had dinner with my wife yesterday, it was a treat for her and we went to a speciality japanese restaurant and ingested enough fat and cholesterol to last us for the rest of the year. The food tastes great. But now we just have to be careful of our diet and exercise regime for the next few months. And we are considered the 'exception' amongst Malaysians in terms of how cautious we are about our health and fitness.

So, don't be surprised if cars designed for asians will become very popular and common in the western world. Meanwhile, we in asia are beginning to go for huge cars. Large Accords and Camry's, the larger they are, the better they sell. The number of Hummers that are showing up on the roads in my country is starting to become quite alarming.

Wouldn't mind so much if this mini MPV didn't make it to where I am in Australia, but I'd loooooooooove for the Concept S styling to find its way through to other Hondas!

It's likely Indonesia might get this as well though. My folks back home need an affordable people mover for huge family outings (I have 30+ cousins!).

Last visit there I saw plenty of Nissan Grand Livinas.

I didn't really check on the dimensions you put out, but I am 180cm tall, and my car is MORE than enough room for me, both front leg and head room and back. I even jack up the seat to see where it will go and my head still didn't hit the roof, barely. The only maybe issue is width room, but I am thin so no problem for me at least. Compared to all the 80s small Hondas, today's 'small' Hondas are absolutely huge. If not for perception or mentally about 'small' cars, I think these cars are simply more than enough for use with the power to move them sufficiently for almost everyone except the widest, I think the Brio-based MPV is probably pretty good at what it will be doing, although I question the similar Jazz size overlap, one not something like the Freed Spike, a Jazz / Fit version but built for the purpose ?

Yes, Tony, I DO want this car.

This car will be perfect for my son who's possessions have outgrown his Fit. With a bit more room, but not as big as a full size van, this would be perfect for him to carry the guitars, amps and perhaps one or two of his buddies along.

it will perfect for my daughter too now that she's going to college.

Not all Americans are 6' 4" and want a Ford F350.

Well... the US Gov. and American Medical Establishment did change (lowered) the definition of overweight about 10 or 15 years ago. Today, you are considered fat while 20 years ago you were not.

So... yeah... to paraphrase Bill Clinton.. "it depends of what the meaning of fat is".

“Currently no such market [mini peoplemover ] exists in Australia but if there’s a trend going on with smaller cars and peoplemover-type demand then, for product planning purposes, we have to think about the future, today,” said Honda Australia MD, Satoshi Matsuzawa during last weekend’s Open House Ceremony in Thailand. “So in this sense, we are taking the opportunity seriously to think about taking the Brio MPV.”

Meanwhile, Matsuzawa-san said we’d most likely have to wait for the next-generation Brio hatch (approximately four years away) but if his team’s study showed demand, and “a specification match could be found, it can be [introduced] earlier” to include the current model.

The rule was changed back in 1998.
Under the new guidelines, 97 million adults -- nearly 55 percent of the U.S. population -- would be considered overweight ...

So the trend is clear, more and more Americans are getting 'overweight', no matter how you slice or dice it.

NYC plans to ban sales of sugary drinks over 16 ounces

No more super-sized Cokes. Forget about stomach-busting 64-ounce sodas at KFC. Even 20-ounce Snapples are on Mayor Bloomberg’s latest heath-conscious hit list.

New York City plans to ban the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks in an effort to combat obesity.

The proposed first-in-the-nation ban would impose a 16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts. It would apply to bottled drinks as well as fountain sodas.

The ban, which could take effect as soon as March, wouldn't apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks or alcoholic beverages.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that he "thinks it's what the public wants the mayor to do."

But there's speculation that customers will just buy two 16-ounce bottles instead of one 20-ounce drink.

A spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association, Stefan Friedman, criticized the proposal as "zealous." He said officials should seek solutions that are actually going to curb obesity.

The proposal requires the approval of the city's Board of Health.

The Associated Press and New York Post contributed to this report.

FDA rejects new name for high fructose corn syrup

NEW YORK (AP) — High fructose corn syrup won't get a wholesome new name after all.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday rejected the Corn Refiners Association's bid to rename its sweetening agent "corn sugar."

Given the sweetener's bad reputation in recent years, the association submitted an application to the agency in 2010 to have the product renamed on nutrition labels.

But the FDA said that it defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystallized food — not a syrup.

Separately, the Corn Refiners Association has also been running a marketing campaign to explain that its syrup is actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as the familiar white, granular table sugar that consumers are familiar with.

That in turn prompted a lawsuit from the Sugar Association last year claiming that the campaign is misleading.

Dan Callister, a lawyer for the Sugar Association, said the FDA's decision confirms his group's position that sugar and high fructose corn syrup are two distinct products.
"What's going on here is basically a con game to suggest otherwise," Callister said. "What do con men do? They normally try to change their name. The FDA has thankfully stopped that."

The Corn Refiners Association issued a statement Wednesday noting that the FDA denied its petition on "narrow, technical" grounds.

The group said it stood by its claim that "the vast majority of American consumers are confused about HFCS."

High fructose corn syrup came into the U.S. market in the late 1970s and 1980s. The product is used widely in cereals, sodas and other processed food and drinks because it's cheaper and mixes easily into recipes. (One reason for today's health problems).

Despite the name, the Corn Refiners Association says the most common forms of it are about half fructose and half glucose.

The American Medical Association has said it wants more research on high fructose corn syrup, but says there's not enough evidence to restrict its use for now. The Center for

Science in the Public Interest has said that there was no evidence that the sweetener is any worse for the body than sugar — and that Americans consume too much of both of them. __ Follow Candice Choi at www.twitter.com/candicechoi

Swift is a sub-compact (or supermini in Europe) class car, so it's more the competitor to Honda Fit. Their direct competitor to Civic hatchback is the SX-4 hatchback.

Brio is actually one class below the Swift. Its direct competitor is Suzuki Splash (no more than 1.2L engine). But I think both Spash and Swift share the same platform (as Fit & Civic Euro share their platform too).

The Concept S isn't the preview for the Brio-based minivan, it was probably the conceptual preview for the next-gen Honda Stream (some say the JDM Odyssey, but I'd say it's closer to the Stream).

Amaebi... well it has no carbos, lots of protein and no fat. True, frying the heads adds fat but it's very tasty and it goes so well with a nice Sapporo... We just eat the whole thing.. I used to pop out the eyes but now I just don't care... it's all good.

(In Spain we eat like that too... battered deep fried calamari rings - Calamares a la Romana - and cold beer are a delicacy.. )

I didn't know it had that effect. Maybe I'll buy some for the weekend! ;-)

Salmon head... well, we eat the salmon and tuna cheeks. So that's good for you. I've never used the whole head except to make fish stock.
