Sales for GM's Entry-Luxury Brand are Down & Young Shoppers Remain Skeptical
Buick sales have dropped for 7 straight months, tied with Cadillac for the longest losing streak among the 41 brands sold in the United States. But unlike Cadillac, which has 2 new nameplates coming this summer, Buick doesn't have new or redesigned vehicles riding to the rescue.
The question confronting Buick is whether the slump is a sign of deeper troubles or simply growing pains now that GM finally has gotten serious about positioning Buick to challenge entry-luxury brands such as Acura and Infiniti
Despite GM's efforts to position Buick against import luxury brands such as Acura and Infiniti, research shows that consumers lump Buick with brands such as Ford and Toyota. In April, those were the 2 most-shopped brands by consumers who also were considering a Buick, according to Edmunds.com.
Until the new lease plan, Buick's lease penetration hovered around 15%. That's below the industry average of around 22% and far lower than the brands Buick is targeting, such as Acura, Lincoln and Infiniti, whose lease penetrations range from 35% to higher than half of sales.

Yeah I don't know if Buick is on the right track with cars like Verano, and the new Encore. I saw the new encore at a recent car show and that thing is small. I can't imagine Buick buyers liking it. If their goal is to attract younger buyers I think some of their styling needs to change a little, the grill for example. I don't see a lot of young people thinking that grill is 'hip', and they are certianly not going to pay $25-30K for a CUV or whatever it's suppose to be that should be on a Chevy lot for $20K.
Buick needs to figure out what they really want to be, the current line up of Lacross Enclave Regal doesn't go well with Verano and Encore IMO. Trying two different directions I think while still trying to be 'upscale'. I don't think they will attract many young buyers, however I do think they should target trying to change perception with them. Figure out a way to get them to check out the cars. Help them to see they arn't the same Buicks from the 80's, 90's and 00's.

It so funny how the consumer can influence a car companies perception or cache. Minus the old man image, this article could have been written and the words Buick replaced with Acura as Acura too is shopped with Toyota and Honda and has similar struggles. It stinks that car companies are automatically written off because of past perception or the badge not being strong enough. In no way am I defending GM, just saying some are already written off so just make damn good products and push it down the throat of the consumer. On a side note, seen a commercial the other day for the 2012 TL and I was excited to see them taking jabs at Lexus and BMW (too lazy to search for link but some others may know what I am talking about).
