Acura's Smaller, Cheaper ILX Compact on Sale Today
"It will create a new segment," Michael Accavitti, VP of marketing for Acura in the U.S.

Accavitti says the new car won't downsize the Acura image, rather it's a return to the "sweet spot" carved out by the Integra when Acura was young. "We continue to look at Acura as the luxury brand it was created to be, an alternative to BMW and Audi and Infiniti."

We wonder why, though, if they wanted to revive our warm feelings for the old Integra, they didn't just revive the name for the new car.

The base engine seemed anemic to reviewer James R. Healey in a recent Test Drive, though Acura says the target younger buyers' won't care. Having grown up their parents' luxury cars, these folks want the snob appeal of the premium nameplate. "They put a higher priority on looking good than on going fast," Acura told Healey.

I don't know whether to laugh or yell obscenities. I'll do both, brb...

About this "sweet spot" the Integra once occupied that Acura wishes in their wildest dreams wants for the ILX - I can only guess they're talking about price, adjusted for inflation, or something other than the actual characteristics of the two cars themselves, or the target audiences of them.

The Integra was a car - RS, LS, GS, SE, GS-R, Type-R - that you wanted to drive! You wanted to toss it around, perfect your shifting technique, spin the engine, take it to 300,000 miles. Not just highschool and college kids, but young professionals (before Acura made that into cringing, vomit-inducing marketing lingo), too. I've met people in their teens, twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, who all loved their Integras. It was a car with spirit, utility, durability, ridiculously reliable, fuel efficient. Even when it was brought over to prop up the Acura brand and bring in the volume (they only had two cars until the Vigor came along), it never seemed like it was just an excuse to sell more cars. It never seemed like it had to cripple the Civic in order to find its place in the market.

The ILX is a car that Acura intends for people who don't even want to drive! How does that work? You want it to take you to work or school and back home, because you have to get there somehow, while voice-to-texting until you can get home and youtwitface all night; supposedly choosing it as your car because it has a premium nameplate that people will think better of you. I really, sincerely hope Acura is not that delusional.

By the way, isn't it sort of strange that HondaFan1990 appeared out of nowhere right as the press embargo was lifted on the ILX, posted like he'd been on here for ages, became annoyed at the lack of ILX love, repeatedly stated "The Integra is dead. Gone. Never coming back. Get over it.", and within 10 days was gone himself?

Yeah, this USA Today article, titled "Acura's smaller, cheaper ILX compact on sale today", stated that. So it's in a national publication, print and online, but someone reading the article today can't go to acura.com and configure an ILX? They can only go to Future Vehicles to be put on the mailing list? It's not about purchasing advertising and rolling it out after Memorial Day.... it's not on their own site!

At first I thought USAToday made a mistake. A 2 can be mistaken for a 5, so I thought the release date was perhaps the 25th.

It's no mistake though. The official announcement went out dated today the 22nd:

http://www.acuranews.com/channels/acura-automobiles-headlines/releases/all-new-2013-acura-ilx-on-sale-today-with-a-starting-price-of-25-900

"05/22/2012
The 2013 Acura ILX goes on sale at Acura dealerships today, May 22, 2012, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP*) starting at $25,900. The all-new ILX offers remarkable value for the money on a luxury scale with robust feature content and premium appeal."

My observations:

(1) Acura management looks incredibly inept for not having the ILX listed as a current vehicle on the website.

(2) Acura does not pay attention to detail in marketing. A company like Apple would never have done something like this.

I can only conclude that some of the people who run Acura are, in fact, complete idiots.

Haha, no. But I am saying that because it is a Honda in the first place which is probably made it so great. And then Acura made some badges and stick them on the car and that's what you have now.

It makes why the Acura brand came about even more puzzling. I know when I saw the Integra (there are still some on the roads) I dont really see it as a luxury car or even entry luxury, but I know it is a nice driving sporty lovable Honda.

If the ILX is built from beginning as a differnt brand (Acura), then should it have all the same qualities as a Honda?

Serously, the Acura brand just makes my head want to explode thinking about it

:) I see what you're saying, especially the last part.

Well, the Integras we got were nicer than the Civics we got. The DOHC engines, standard four wheel discs, ABS on all about the RS (or did it have it, too?), alloy wheels, fit and finish, interior details, available leather (even though it wasn't that luxurious), nicer cloth (maybe comparable to the Civic EX) with adjustable headrests, thicker carpet (maybe like the EX again), longer warranty, and so on. There was plenty of soft touch materials on the dash and doors, and the plastics were durable. Ah! And the glovebox was lit and lockable!

Most of the Civics we had at the time didn't have power windows, moonroofs, 4 wheel discs, and only the '99-'00 Si and the del Sol VTEC had DOHC (VTEC!) engines.

I think the ILX, still being based on the Civic and posed as a "gateway" into Acura especially, should have Honda qualities. Those are good qualities. Just add in the more premium content. Sporting content can be premium content, too.
