Talk about a weak entry...
It never seemed to live up to expectations.

The improvements — such as 1 mpg more in each driving mode and more rear headroom — are laudable, but Insight remains personality-challenged.
That is, it's difficult to like. |
Well, that is one way to begin an article. Things could only get better from there, right?

The sales numbers are all over on this side of the world. But I just saw a (Jazz) Fit Hybrid. Very, very nice on the inside and seems more 'fit' for it.

The Fit Hybrid should replace the Insight here, IMO.

I think it should, but I think Honda really caught out by just how popular the fit platform will be and they can't seem to make enough of them, especially when it's more worth it to elsewhere than norh America for example. isn't that why they are making a factory in Mexico?
If the Fit hybrid looks is that good in person (I haven't driven it, but among many features, same sized 4 wheel disc brakes - my car has 4 wheel disc, but crappy size rear one.) If Honda has decided to save money on this one, I really can't tell. But of course it may be slightly different version for the market here, where hybrids are totally tax free and they probably made more profits on these than elsewhere and can afford to stuff it with things.

I think you may be right, that there is more profit margin for Honda on the Jazz/Fit in Japan, Asia, ASEAN, so maybe more margin for more features. We've been discussing the strength of the yen versus dollar for a while now. Sales of every Honda/Acura imported from Japan were down in the US last month. Is that because of smaller inventories on those models due to a slowdown in imports? Once the Fit is produced in North America, the profit margin on Fit will increase for American Honda. They're more open now to assembling hybrid vehicles outside of Japan (IMA, anyway), as evidenced by the ILX hybrid model now produced in Indiana, for example. Maybe a Fit hybrid hecho en Mexico in the future?

Honda really dropped the ball by not selling the Fit Hybrid here. The Prius c can now simply dominate that space, and even if Honda does bring the Fit in, it is already way behind the Prius 8 ball.
From the Toyota news room:
The Prius Family vehicles (Prius, Prius v, Prius Plug-in and Prius c) accounted for a total combined sales volume of 25,168 units. Based on current sales, the demand for the fuel-saving Prius Family models seems to be outpacing the company's initial U.S. target of more than 220,000 units this year.
Notable among the Prius models is the sales pace of the subcompact Prius c. This new model which offers an EPA-rated 53 city mpg and a starting MSRP of $18,950 continued its rapid sales pace with 4,006 units sold in April. During its first 49 days on the market, Prius c posted sale of 8,901 units.
“We’re tracking well ahead of that,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager, in an interview with Bloomberg this week in Los Angeles. “I’ve ordered additional production. I’m confident we’ll get additional production, but globally we’re seeing high demand, particularly in Japan.” |

Although I did not see the Prius C up close (it is sold here as well), I can say that it should not be a contest between the two. It's smaller, and in my opinion even more boring than the Fit. I first saw the Prius C when it was right in front of me and my friend pointed it out saying , "hey look isn't that the new hybrid car" and I actually looked to the left side at the parked BMW pointed at it and said where? that one?
honestly the shape of the prius is just so boring (i was looking from the back) i just totally missed it

Toyota sold more Priuses in the US last month than Honda sold Civics. Not Civic Hybrids. Civics. Including the Civic Hybrid.
That's just astonishing, when hybrids play such a small part in Honda's sales volume here. It's these "green" cars that are supposed to be the car for today. It's Honda's full-on dive into "green" car tech and propa-, er, marketing that has starved it of character and buzz. For what? 1800 sales a month? Across three cars?
