I have this growing suspicion that the next generation MDX is going to break its connection with the Pilot and share the RLX chassis.
I've said elsewhere that the new MDX looks bigger. The current RL is four inches longer than the current MDX and will likely grow. If I'm right about the chassis, then the MDX will not only grow but also gain access to all the RLX's fancy drive trains.
Added benefits to Honda would be greater production volume and reduced unit costs.
It also potentially allows the RLX to be built alongside the MDX Acura.

My first impression is that its silhouette looks dated for an, as-yet-to-be-released vehicle.
And an image of the Fantasy Factory version just flashed in my head (putting the future in motion) and it wasn't especially pretty.
Is the "reset button" is stuck on 2007?

Or it might end up looking like this:

From a CAFE requirement, I think sharing an RLX engine/hybrid drive system is almost a given for the big MDX.
@Neal, the US design (whether Torrance or Pasadena) seems to repeat this problem over and over... the designs have moments of freshness but then plaster on the 'old' at some point... usually the rear is the fresh part (thinking Crosstour, ILX, new RDX, Accord Coupe, ZDX) . From a design perspective, whats the problem they seem incapable of resolving? Is it the expectation of a common look in front? Couldn't agree more with your comments.... but at some point, aren't designers usually fired when this happens in other companies?

I think whoever edited that first picture is amazing. I actually think the new MDX will look like that. Well, expect for the headlights. Acura surely wouldn't just slap on the RDX headlights and call it good.

Dominick: Nice job there. Notice you added the ZDX wheels as well. Those are definitely the nicest ones coming out of the Acura stable right now.
Integrator: Your right! In most companies if you fail enough times you get fired. But since the top management of American Honda thinks the Crosstour is beautiful, I don't think anyone is in danger of being kicked to the curb. Loyalty is another Japanese trait, and the top management is more likely to be promoted.

Thanks rocky, but it is not my picture. It's from a member on Acurazine.

I don't see the RLX and MDX sharing a chassis as the MDX has been always built from Honda's large truck platform. Given the current RL and current MDX share many mechanicals/electronics now I don't see chassis sharing as a necessity as they could still share mechnicals and electronics without sharing a platform. Add to that the increased compromise from sharing platforms for 2 very different applications and all Acura would end up with is a very heavy platform ala Infiniti.

Repeating my self is getting old boys............This is a MULE!!!!!! The shell we see is nothing, nadda, not even CLOSE to what the 2014 MDX will look like. AGAIN! It is a Drivetrain test vehicle. We will not see the REAL body on unit until spring of next year testing..........

I was replying to the original posters comments about platform sharing. I KNOW...... this is a mule as it's clearly evident by all the camouflage and the mismatch of parts that you see.

So when exactly is the RLX coming out? I have read late 2012, early 2013 to late 2013. The new MDX will have to come out after the RLX if it is using e-SHAWD as the RLX is supposed to be the first Acura using this technology. I think Acura will retain the mechanical sh-AWD on the MDX as it works very well and the MDX has been such a hit, don't want to mess up a good thing. They may offer e-SHAWD as a higher perf, higher end, more fuel efficient version. I hope they don't do a fwd base model or go to a regular awd version as that means they are also taking the MDX downmarket and closer to the RDX.
