Yes... rain really wrecks the mileage.

In my 06 HCH I noticed that rain (with the Michelin Xs) would drop the mileage by as much as 4 mpg.

I have not had a chance to look at it with the new BSs.
Thanks for sharing Tony, I've only experienced rain a couple of times with the Insight and I did sense a strong effect on mileage.

Some apparently minor things can have an effect. I park at work in a spot where I can takeoff driving forward because letting the car creep in reverse out of a parking space will have an impact of at least .5 mpg in my one hour round-trip commute.

I know this might seem insignificant but when your striving for the highest possible numbers every little bit counts.

At this point I'm looking for gains as small as .1 mpg and yet the resourceful little car managed to helped me beat our round-trip record on wednesday by 1.0 and yesterday our one-way top score by 1.1 mpg!

Electric-only mode is being induced during the last few hundred feet of the route to boost mpg (even though this might not benefit real world FE). I wonder if we'll continue to improve these scores; if not, it's been quite a ride to make it this far.

Jeff, I messed up on the post image because the title says Round-Trip as opposed to One-Way. I'm posting again to correct this. It would be greatly appreciated if you could delete the incorrect one and this request as well. Thanks.

So, today after work I merge on the freeway and within a minute or two of cruising and gliding in the slow lane while keeping up with traffic at around 55 mph, a tiny pickup truck carrying a big sofa going 45 moves in front of me and stays there most of the way! ...I couldn't have asked for more.

Due to a slightly low battery level, electric-only mode was somewhat limited during the last few hundred feet.

Hi Hondasrule, excellent post. when you take your pictures, do you mind also converting it to L/100 km. Being in Canada it is easier to convert to mpg with Canadian gallons. Although are Insight mpg is calculated using U.S. gallons, when we talk mpg with each other it is using Canadian gallons. We average 4.4 without really trying to hard, it has taught me to get better mpg out of my Odyssey though, I try harder in it than the Insight.

To make it easy and less confusing I believe the formula is 235.214584/MPG = L/100km. In this case 68.9 MPG =3.42L/100km. Or you know you could just hold down the km button and it will change your gauges although it only goes to the tenths space.

Today I made it to work with 61.5mpg (my highest was 58.0) which offered the best chance so far to beat the 63.5 round-trip score. The way back was challenging because traffic was a bit light but I was lucky enough to beat it by a hair!!!

Real world FE also moved up slightly from 49.6 to 49.8 with the latest tank fillup (calculated by hand). Call_In, this time the trip computer was as optimistic as yours by 3.0mpg (up from 2.8).

So, it happened!

Call_In, when you said I was getting dangerously close to 70 I really felt you were being too optimistic (I just didn't see it yet). At that point I was just trying to focus on beating my score even by a small fraction if I could.

When I reached 68.9mpg a few days ago I felt 70 had become a possibility, but I had no idea how long it would take for everything to fall into place just right for it to happen. The one thing I did differently this time was to induce electric-only mode earlier at the end of the trip to maximize the result. For this, the battery level had to be sufficient.

…driving to and from work has never been this much fun.

I always post these scores knowing well that it might be my last highest or that it could be a long time before I’m able to beat it. All I can do is keep trying while learning how to extract a bit more efficiency from my driving environment, the car, and myself to increase the odds.

Today a few things made a difference; in addition to favorable freeway load I got two critical traffic lights on green (these I usually don’t get), I also drove with my right shoe off which resulted in much better throttle control. I did this because I read somewhere about hypermilers doing it. A few days ago I felt taking my right shoe off for commuting was overkill (even though I take both shoes off on long trips); today I made the switch and loved it!

Tomorrow will be three months since we got our Insight and I’ve only listened to the stereo a couple of times while commuting. I do this to I avoid any distractions because the opportunity to beat a previous score can present itself at anytime :)

Thanks Malcolm, I never guessed numbers like these would happen for me. Granted, the driving environment is a key ingredient here and I do work hard for it, but in the end these FE numbers are only possible because this unpretentious little hybrid actually has what it takes.

I've owned hondas exclusively for the past 29 years and this one feels as authentic to me as our first one. It's honest in a similar way our 99 civic was and little quirky which doesn't bother me at all since hybrids have a lot more to juggle. And, it's also packed with features I appreciate (wish the stereo sounded a little better).

Like all our previous Hondas, it works diligently to do its best within its given abilities.

Manually calculated, it came out to 54.1 mpg which is 1.2 under Call_In's impressive best tank score currently logged on Spritmonitor (55.3 mpg). Also, my score is .5mpg below danielgr's best to date and I find this mind boggling considering he drives a manual CRZ with an EPA estimated rating of 31/37/34 while my 2012 Insight is rated 41/44/42 (city/combined/highway).

Hey, only 488 miles on a tank? What gives? That's like what? 9 Gallons? You still have another gallon and a half! I always like to push my tanks, I feel bad if I don't get at least 500 miles.
Congrats on the High Score though, your average is already over mine, you just have to get that 3000 miles in to claim your spot. If I can't catch up to you by the fall then it's over because winters here are brutal on my MPG, according to my Fuelly account last July was 53.4 versus this past January's 45.7.

Call_In, I should have known 488 miles to you would probably amount to weak sauce ;) and you’re right on, it was 9.033 gallons. This is the first time I get down to 0 range left and wasn’t sure what to expect. Now I know there were 1.6 gallons left!

Your progress on fuelly is impressive since you're averaging 100 fill-ups!, you’re definitely fighting back, great job! I have a huge advantage because my fill-ups are few but I think you’ll easily narrow the gap over time and maybe even reverse it - so I'll have to work hard to keep that from happening.

I should qualify within a couple of weeks and might even fill-up a bit early to be able to jump in. Thanks for the post.

My one-way commute posted scores so far have all been "from work" but within the last couple of weeks I decided to ditch part of the freeway and do streets on my way to work and as a result I was able to break my old 61.5mpg score (not posted) and decided to start posting these "to work" scores from now on.

My work has an elevation difference of about +90 feet from my house, so while these numbers aren't as impressive as my slightly down-hill commute home, these up-hill numbers offer an opportunity for real world and best tank score improvements. We'll see if these materialize... cheers!

Hey P54, not sure if this is what you want to know but to give you an idea, when I start the car I touch the gas once and let it creep through the parking lot at about 10 mph as it warms up. Then I get on the right lane on the avenue and cruise-control about 1.2 miles at 30mph or so to get to the freeway (always on the right lane and without cars behind me).

Once on the freeway (this time around) I was able to cruise at 45mph (flow of traffic) most of it (about 9 miles total). At this speed the trip computer shows 75mpg almost all the time. I try to maintain this avoiding acceleration as much as possible. When I get out of the freeway I cruise manually at about 35mph for about 1.5 miles and the last portion I went at about 27mph (electric-only mode no cars behind).

All this while gliding as much as possible (which I think is critical and plan on discussing in the "optimizing fuel economy" soon). I also used everything I’ve learned about FE during the six months I’ve had the car.

My best tank MPG to date is posted earlier in this thread (scroll up 4 images or so) at 56.7 MPG and my current one will be close to that. Keep in mind the Insight’s trip computer is about 3mpg optimistic (manually calculated came out to 54.1).

This week has been crazy for me because I've been able to beat 4 of my best scores so far after 3 months from my most recent one and it looks like tomorrow I might beat my best tank as well :)

If you click on the Real World FE icons in the TOV users Real World FE database table that danielgr put together in the Optimizing Fuel Economy forum, you can see the numbers for all my individual fillups if you want to know exactly what my actual FE per tank has been since I got the car (I have 11 entries).

Also you might want to take a look at Call_In’s for example who has been participating for a long time and has an MPG average virtually the same as mine and Daniel's.

Thanks for the comment.
