What does this mean for the ILX hybrid?

Wow, I'm shocked. No, really.
It's a testament to Toyota/Lexus' huge marketing muscle that they managed to scam >10000 people out of damn near $40k for one of these turds in the year 2010.
It proves American consumers are largely idiots once you penetrate their initial shield.

I was really shocked when some friends in their early 70's traded their Avalon in on one of these. They are not the type of people that would stoop so low as to buy a common Prius, which is why they ended up with this. They seem to like it. They say it gets between 36-38. I am not impressed with the car itself, but I was suprised at how much more roomy it was inside than I expected.

Jeff, at least they have the sense to kill the stupid thing. I can think of another company who needs to do the same thing, times about 4 or 5.

If the ES will get hybrid, then I guess the HS250h is no longer necessary. It doesn't seem to be significantly more luxury than a Camry hybrid, in fact, it's even smaller than the Camry. The pricing seems a bit high as it starts at $37k and can easily go to $48k with the premium trim and tech package. I thought the ILX hybrid is quite expensive, but the HS is simply in another territory.

I've been saying for years: conventional sedan to hybrid conversions do not work in the marketplace. A car that is not designed from the ground up to be a hybrid is going to be compromised in utility.
The ILX Hybrid is the latest example of this idiocy from Honda. I'm very certain it'll be a sales flop just like the Civic Hybrid and this Lexus.

Are they killing it off in the US only? If globally I would be surprised. The Lexus is selling pretty well where I am (for what it is). Helped of course that hybrids are totally tax free, so they cost about so low that they are toally worth it.
Not that I like the car.

This is a Euro Market Toyota Avenis with US market hybrid powerplant. Gets 68 mpg(Imperial gallons) with a 2.2 diesel in the UK . Saw plenty of them in a recent trip to London.

It seems there is a conflict between luxury and economy with these cars. If a buyer has enough money to afford a Lexus, it would seem to me that they would also not be very sensitive to gas prices, and if a buyer were focusing on economy, they would do a lot better with a Prius.
Sadly, the ILX hybrid is probably not going to do very well for the same reason.

NPR Planet Money had a podcast on hybrid car designs - people who buy hybrids want others (neighbors, colleagues etc.) to know that they drive a hybrid. Therefore Prius.
All the other conventional cars with hybrid powertrains will continue to suffer in the market place. I'm very curious how Ford will do with their C-Max, as well as the EV Focus.

Not true... strictly speaking. A large portion of Prius sales are the most expensive trim levels. They're not saving gas because they want to save money. Many of them could afford a Mercedes if that was what they wanted. They want the green image. The Prius has that in spades. The HS doesn't.
I think you're right about the ILX not doing well, but only because it also lacks the necessary green-cred.
