mp3 music in a stock Accord is not an issue.
I dare you to do a blind A-B comparison and I'll bet you won't be able to tell the difference.

Unless you have an audiophile grade sound system in your car (bare minimum would be Acura's ELS system or equiv) no way is .mp3 (at 256kbps or higher) quality loss discernable.

Agreed. With my 2011 Accord EX ("premium" audio system), I use mostly MP3s (256kbps) and XM with the occasional CD. With the merely adequate quality of the sound system, all three sources sound fine and for all practical purposes, one is indistinguishable from the other quality-wise.

I lurk and almost never comment. But, the difference between CDs and mp3s is there. I am a brass musician and listen to brass chamber music frequently while driving in my 2010 Accord EX-L.

The difference is noticeable in the envelope of sound produced by musical instruments, i.e. the fundamental note and the overtone structure of a note which allows us the differentiate between a trumpet and, say, a clarinet playing the same note.

With mp3s the distinctions are blurred more. I have heard French horns which almost sound like cornets; tubas playing high which almost sound like trombones.

Now a CD played through the Accord stock system ain't great by any standard, but it removes a veil or two over the music compared to the standard mp3. And in a live recording you get a touch more room ambience with a CD.

You're right, of course. I did a direct A - B comparison with a Miles Davis CD and an mp3 made directly from that CD on my new Odyssey, and the difference is obvious, even to an old tone deaf fart, such as myself!

Bitrates do matter; 256kbps and higher .mp3 files is what you want.
Do a blind test on 256kbps mp3 files in your Honda stock stereo.
If not a blind test, then it is all placebo.

Is your car completely sound insulated from the road and other noises? Does it REALLY matter to you if you do not hear some instruments correctly? You should not listen to the music and drive in that case. Or you can install one of classic turntables and $5000 Hi-Fi Stereo and then really enjoy it (besides needle skipping every now and then). Or just buy a truck and bring live band every time you drive from A to B.

NO, I do not want CD player in my next car. MP3 is sufficient; less moving parts, less stuff to break. My MP3 are all VBR...

LOL.... hmm.. ever driven a TL with ELS?

VBR? ROTLOL.... So, 90s.

How about 24/96 non lossy WAV as entry level?

To answer your questions:

No, but it's irrelevant.. listen to the ELS setup in the TL with a good source (not MP3).
Yes.

5000 bucks... you mean just the amp, right?

http://www.audioresearch.com/

Because that turntable ain't gonna be cheap...

http://www.linn.co.uk/systems/products/lp12/sondek-lp12

And with one of these your records will seldom, if ever skip:

You will also need something like this... (it's the one I use... recommended for the LP12. Different turntables likes different racks).

Seriously, sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut.

CD changers are clearly dead - but the CD ripping feature in some Hondas is a nice interim system. Honda's own literature states that Bluetooth streaming offers inferior quality to XM, FM, CD and USB. The order should probably be CD, USB, aux input, XM, FM, then BT. But the reality is very different. In North America FM and XM are horribly compressed. Even FM can sound fantastic - as BBC used to prove in UK and maybe still does, even though FM is being phased out by DAB. I find the quality order here is CD, USB, BT streaming, which in the relatively noisy environment of a car are close, followed by a margin by XM and FM. I use BT streaming most, followed by XM. Then probably AM just for local news.

I don't get the bit about CDs being too quiet. They can have very wide DR in which case the quiet bits are very quiet. But I've never experienced a loudness inadequacy stemming from CDs themselves. Volume variation on mp3s is more irritating.

I still occasionally get asked how cassettes can be played in modern cars (use aux socket with a walkman). Bring back vinyl.

Is it true they are coming out with iPod docs with old type tubes to expand the sound. Nothing sounded better then the tube systems of the 70's and 80's...........Home stuff.........I replaced ALL the speakers in my Civic Hybrid and slapped in a 900 watt amp........It sounds SO good.....

I still have customers asking about playing their cassettes.... CDs sound better (in 99% of cases) - and a lot of people still have them and may want to use them even if primarily we stream or use USB these days.

They really had tube systems in the 70s and 80s? I thought 50s and very early 60s before a 90s revival? Tube systems clip very gradually whereas transistors it's all sudden and nasty. Or so my dad would tell me.
