I am in a bind for a "beater" car. I am currently borrowing my father-in-law's 2000 S80 T6. It is a nice car, auto, totally loaded. He has offered to sell to me for $2k. I commute, gets 22 mgpg : (

Problems, it has a vacuum leak that will need to be addressed at some point near the brake booster, could be a line or the booster itself. Also shutters between shifts between 3 and 4, being doing so since 2003. Currently has 110k miles.

With all that I have been looking at 98-02 accords. found one with 178k miles for $3400, manual. I have always had honda's and have always had manuals. The car is a little rough around the edges, but tested pretty well for my limited knowledge.

The $1400 doesnt sound like a lot, but it is, we have to replace the clutch and tranny in the CRV which will be just north of $3k, all while funding a renovation at home.

I am gambling either way I suppose, just wondering if there are opinions on the lesser of the gambles?

Oye, thoughts?

I'd go for a Honda.
Volvo is 12 years old with an Auto with shuttered shift, brakes(I personally don't mess with it. Had a bad experience)
Honda is Manual which is a + for an old used. You've already driven Hondas before so you kind of tell what it's like, intuitions.

Imho, when buying a new car I'd take the one that pleases you most without being so worried about the next 10 years (assuming you'd sell at some point), but when buying that kind of "cheap old thing" I'd pay the premium for the reliable one. 1400 USD can go pretty fast on an old troubled car, at least where I live.

There's a reason why the Accord is worth more than the Volvo....

A very good reason...

The totally loaded Volvo with the bad brakes has a lot of things that can break that will cost a lot of money to fix... parts and labor are not cheap. The brakes and transmission may well take you way north of 1400 bucks.

The Accord with stick (I assume 2.4 liter), if it runs well, should be easy to maintain and parts and labor are cheaper and abundant.

What's the matter with the transmission in your CRV?

Either car will very likely need unexpected repairs . . .

The Honda will probably be cheaper to repair. Many more independent (lower cost) shops will work on it, and used and rebuilt parts are readily available everywhere. I'd offer less than $3400 for the Honda, however. That seems high.

The volvo is $2k because it is my father in law's car, he will ask for more and probably fetch more for it if we pass.

The clutch in our crv imploded and wore a hole through the tranny-see my thread under the pilot forum-looking to replace.

The asking price for the accord is 3995, I offered 3k, he came back with 3400. if it is still there Monday I will offer 3200 once my buddy who owns his own shop, has a loot at it.

The S80 is a far cooler car (sorry). You can't really do much about the transmission except to take it easy and change fluids often; otherwise the vacuum leak should be fairly inexpensive to fix. How long do you intend to keep the beater? If it's only for a year or two I'd take the S80 personally.
