Why Do Dog Lovers Miss the Honda Element?
Many dog fans, especially those with larger breeds, say Honda and other car makers don’t truly understand their needs. They may be right. For people looking to replace their beloved Elements, Honda recommends the CR-V compact crossover. It seems to make sense, since the two vehicles have always been closely related. But all you have to do is open the CR-V’s rear hatch to realize why it just doesn’t stack up.

While the Element was a box on wheels, the CR-V is more shapely and fashion-conscious, with a tapered rear end and sleeker profile. As a result its interior doesn’t have the same dog-friendly quality. The Element’s hard-plastic and rubber-lined cargo bay was also more flexible and easier to clean and maintain. You could wash it with a hose in a pinch. The ceiling height and cube-like shape of the Element’s rear area also made it ideal for large dogs who could stand up comfortably and move around easily.

I have been looking very closely at a used Honda Element for me and my Saint Bernard. There simply is not another vehicle so well suited for dogs as the Honda Element. The resale value on used Elements with well over 100K miles are all still above $10K. The removable back seats, washable floors, and low tail gate makes it perfect.

I hope Honda realizes that there is a very dedicated niche market out there for this vehicle and comes out with another model in the near future.

My two sons were (and still are) much like puppies. And over the 85,000+ miles we had our Element they never destroyed it. It held up very well!

They seem to be dedicated to the mass-market these days.

I don't think so. They're just dedicated to answering questions no one is asking. Instead of wasting money on the ZDX they could've redesigned the Element.

At its peak it was selling 50k units a year which is much more than the ZDX, CR-Z, Crosstour, or Insight. With a new Element the only things they'd need to improve would be to update the styling, slap the CR-V drivetrain in, and maybe figure out a clever solution for a 5th seat.

Yet, it seems to be a answering a question that nobody asks that produced the Element. I have no gripes about Honda testing out unique vehicles niches, in fact i encourage it, but when Honda has something that works, i would hope they would know enough to keep it...unfortunately for dog owners, bean counters don't seem to think so. Without the Element, dog owners are all forced to Subaru...which imo is more human oriented as opposed to Doggie oriented. So to speak.

The only real complaint i have ever heard of was that the gas mileage was mediocre.

Indeed that's what's maddening. I don't mind Honda taking a swing and a miss here and there. But when they make a product that people like, then drop it and make a product that sells poorly it leaves you scratching your head.

That's a good one to look into, but the styling is definately two thumbs down. Looks too much like a commercial vehicle mixed with a mini RV.

I think Honda could have got into the mini-cargovan game with the next Element. Maybe not so much for Japan since Daihatsu or Suzuki probably have a lock on that market. But areas like North American were practically begging for them.

I see Transit Connects everywhere. The business i work for dropped the Equinox and old minivans they had for inter-company mail and cargo, with a pair of Transits. Its wide enough to fit a standard pallet or a few euro skids and fits taller items than the full size E-series does.

In Europe manufactures sell low roof versions of these cars, I could see Honda going this route. It wouldn't be perfect but a commercial version of the Element would shore up sales and keep the passenger version available to dog lovers and ppl who love that kind of vehicle. They are goofy looking but get the job done. The only other vehicle that may fit the bill would be a Mazda 5, which is a great car that just never seems to connect with people.

Fiat Fiorino

At its peak?

Jeez, what year is it? Unfortunately, its sales fell like a stone after 2007/08.

So, what is a hit product?

Whenever it was killed by a automaker. LOL

I think in a year or two we will see similar size vehicles from Nissan and Chrysler-Fiat.

Maybe if and when ford moves production to the US, we will also get the low roof version, which is definitely better looking.

It is a niche, but I think it is a more interesting niche than some of the things Honda has done lately.

I think those that are redesigned around seven years are pretty much selling like a hot cake.

The person who commented in that article that real dog lovers find the element's rear platform too high is right. One of my colleagues who is totally dog crazy and a pro dog trainer has tried CRvs also but the best thing is a minivan, preferably old, so it doesnt matter if the dogs start to chew it. He has Mazda MPV purely for the dogs. Mazda Puppy Vehicle. Failing that Fits ought to be good. They wouldnt like Civics...they'd say the ride is "rough".

They also may have traction problems on corners on the Element's hard plastic floor...fixable i know.
