Insight expert reviews?    (Score: 1, Normal) 05-04-2012 02:59

I posted this one in another thread but I've wanted to start a conversation in this forum about reviews that I've found to be a bit questionable IMO.

Kelly Blue Book’s expert review of the 2012 Insight (link) came up with this interesting conclusion at the end of their review in their "You May Not Like This Car If" comment:

If you're looking to a hybrid car only to save on gasoline, there are actually some non-hybrid alternatives that come pretty close to matching the 2012 Honda Insight hybrid's fuel consumption. Among the more notable cars are the 40-mpg Hyundai Elantra etc. etc. [...]
My thoughts are, they are absolutely correct, because if we were to compare the Insight’s 42 EPA combined rating to the Elantra’s 33, it’s barely 27% more fuel efficient, and if instead of favoring hwy ratings we consider city ratings alone, then the Insight is a mere 41% more fuel efficient than the Elantra which of course we all know is as "pretty close to matching" as it gets (sarcasm).

I suppose we should be thankful we have these "experts" helping us all understand a type of vehicle they don't seem to have a clue about when they can't even tell the difference between "city, combined, and hwy" EPA ratings.

NOTE: I'm not trying to bash the Elantra here, I'm only questioning the accuracy and fairness of the comparison as presented by the reviewer while basing my observations on the EPA published ratings for both vehicles.

The stupidity and incompetence of "Kelley Blue Book's Experts" are simply breathtaking. These experts are touting the numbers and have no freaking clue. Normal is dumb and broke. I don't want to be normal.

This 'contagion' apparently affects Edmunds' Experts too. As exemplified by AVFM's NPR radio stint.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Not just them. Everyone around me is saying how Hyundai and Kia is now most fuel efficient cars. And also, I recall even on some here on TOV are fooled by the magic numbers as well a few years back, saying what the point of a hybrid is.

Well, deal with it. This is the market which Honda has decided they want to focus on nowadays.

Average mileage after 37k miles in my 10 Insight = 46 mpg.

Average mileage of Motor Trend's Elantra after 12k miles = 26.6 mpg

Motor Trend's mileage is not an anomaly either.

Enough said.

Could you be a bit more specific? seems clear you feel Honda is at fault here, but I don't know what market are you referring to, is it cars in general, hybrids, fuel efficient vehicles, Hyundai's market, NA?

...I'd like to understand your point of view.

The problem IS nobody's calling the Emperor has no clothes. Nobody is talking about it, all these car magazines have gone dumb. If a tree falls in the forest, did it really make a sound?
Nobody has the ballsy to call Hyundai out... nobody...

Next week will be five months since we got our 2012 Insight and I really enjoy driving it!

This car was thousands less than a Prius and while not quite as efficient - which is acceptable to me since it was quite more affordable - it's definitely way up there compared to the competition.

IMO the car delivers beautifully, most importantly in the efficiency department - by design - something which critics don't seem to have much of an eye for in the first place as shown by their FE myopia or as I like to call it "40 mpg Elantra syndrome" ;)
