Wow, that's amazing, Honda is so skilled that they manage to lower output while the VW group is saying there next 2.0 will deliver 225hp while BMW is happy with 240hp from a small 2.0
I don't care about NA, forced induction etc any longer, the name of the game is now Great MPG and nice acceleration... seems Honda is focusing on both haha :)

Come report back to us after those VW and BMW motors have about 150K on the clock.

Come on, 12 years ago Honda came out with a NA 2.0L with 240 HP.
Honda is not lowering output, the current Accord have 177 Hp and 190 Hp and this is what Honda says about the new ED engine:
"Standalone engine features 5% improvements in fuel efficiency and output as well as a 10% improvement in maximum torque compared to the previous engine."
If increase in Hp is compared to 177 or 190 I do not know, only that it has been mentioned "more than 181 Hp". With 10 % more maximum torque we are talking about 178 lb-ft. instead of 162. With a broader power-band I would call this a stronger motor and with CVT that in itself will improve FE with 10 % compared to 5AT the new Accord seems to be able to return some impressive FE numbers. More than likely should hit 40 mpg HWY.
Just forget that with the German turbos and with $10 a gallon for fuel some places in Europe I think people will appreciate better FE more than the turbo power.

You didn't get all of the details.
The actual statement from Honda was "MORE THAN 181HP."
That said, if the car is making more torque over the same band, then it WILL, by simple mathematical function make more power. It is hard to believe that it will output 10% additional torque, and not rev to 7K. The K24 has already had the exhaust side completely compromised, VTEC on the intake side only, and it STILL manages to make power at 7K even with torque dropping rapidly, and a top end unfriendly bore to stroke ratio. Not to mention without the benefit of DI. Simply put, I don't think the ED engine will have too much trouble outperforming the current versions of the K-series. Assuming the ED makes exactly its 10% torque advantage at 7100RPM (probably not difficult to do), it would be worth about an extra 22HP at that RPM. This would take the Accord to 212HP, and versions like the TSX's to around 220.

Do you forget that the 2.0 engine from BMW is also available in 184 hp, which incidentally has 11% better mileage than the 240 hp variant?
P.S. Remember BMW's high pressure fuel pump debacle? Good luck.:)

I never understood the use of "more than x" unless x was a multiple of 5 or 10. What does "more than 181" convey that "more than 180" wouldn't do just as well?
Except now we know the engine has at least 181.5 hp.

Two reasons that I can think of right away:
1.) 181hp is probably the hp of one of the competitors?
2.) 181hp is the lowest state of tune available for this engine.

Also, they probably don't want competitors to know the actual figures. If you tell them that your engine going to be making exactly 210hp, then other competitors will simply make 215hp or something.

Yep. I remember the 02 Altima V6 arriving with a class leading 240hp. Next year when the Accord matched it, Nissan bumped it to 245hp IIRC.

and this is why tov is going to shit. people jumping to conclusions all over the place. it's all doom and gloom for honda. they should just fold and give up altogether right?
